Sifteo Cubes go next-generation, square gaming gets more portable (update)

Sifteo Cubes

It's hard to believe, but Sifteo's interactive gaming Cubes first went on sale just over a year ago. Fast forward to the present, and the company has unveiled version two of the MIT-born blocks. If you'll recall, the 1.7-inch squares let you play interactive table-top games, each featuring a 1.5-inch LCD screen, motion sensing and wireless connectivity. With this next-gen variant, Sifteo's improved the graphics, added capacitive touch to the screen (the original acted like a physical button) and doubled the amount of Cubes that can interact at once to 12. The V2 Cubes also come packed with a dedicated, AAA-powered, wireless base station / speaker that stores your titles, sparing the need for a computer to play as was the case with the originals -- an onboard USB allows downloaded files to be transferred from your computers. Developers looking to create content for the device will also pleased to know that Sifteo's releasing its next SDK on October 1st.

Ready for some tangibly-cute Cube gameplay? Pre-orders begin today at Sifteo's website, priced at $130 for 3 Cubes with a base station and five games, and $30 for each additional cube. They're set to ship in November, so in the meantime you'll find details in the video demo and press release after the break.

Update: For those curious, we've learned that the original Cubes are not compatible with the new ones, but Sifteo has emailed owners with a $50 voucher that they can use toward upgrading.

Operational Problems to Avoid in a Commercial Real Estate Agency

When you run a commercial real estate agency with many salespeople, it is important to avoid operational problems that stifle listing opportunity and deal conversions. All too often today we see some agents cutting corners when it comes to operational support and backup for the sales team.

You cannot make good commissions when you cut corners.

The common operational problems we see today are urually:
?

-Lack of support staff to assist the sales team with their listings, advertising, database, and contract or lease documentation processes.
-The sales team spending too much time on administrative duties therefore not getting into the market and meeting enough of the decision makers.
-Little or no database support to capture the qualified enquiry accurately and in a timely way.
-Little or no marketing material to assist the sales team with their sales presentations and pitches.
-Poorly constructed marketing campaigns that have little relevance to the property precinct or the listed property.
-Lack of consistent prospecting and cold calling systems and strategies on the part of the sales team.
-Sales staff that do not know how to handle technology in the presentation and marketing process.
-Selection of under experienced staff with little or no market presence.

Let's face the facts; today's commercial real estate market is challenging and competitive with many agents chasing the same listings. This means that your agency and the sales team should have all the required tools at their fingertips to move on a potential listing and take it to market as quickly and effectively as possible.

Marketing a property today is not an experiment for inexperienced salespeople; the clients and property owners that you deal with really require the best salespeople to help them complete the transaction as effectively as possible.

There is a place for having property cadets learning the trade behind your experienced people; this provides for some succession or growth in the sales team. There is no place for employing poorly skilled or untested salespeople in today's market; they will cost you money and*waste your time.

Key Strategies

Here are some key strategies to help you with the development of a real estate agency in today's property market:

1.A new agency business with inadequate funding from the outset will be difficult to sustain momentum. It takes about six months of hard work to get an agency presence and dominance into the local precinct. Signage presence will always help you here but the skills, focus and consistent actions of the sales team will require funding for a solid period of time before leads and opportunities are easily coming to your office.

2.The agency should have an established business plan focusing on the periods of one year, two years, and five years. It takes about one or two years of sustained hard work with a successful sales and leasing team to break even. The second year will be the year for focusing on the generation of profit, leading into the five year business success plan.

3.The branding of your real estate office should be consistent across all marketing materials and signboards. All listings should receive a signboard at the time of listing. Signboard presence and dominance will strengthen your market share.

4.Always strive to get a sole agency or exclusive agency on the properties that you list. Some property markets will let you do this although open listings are more common at the early stages of opening a real estate office. The transition from taking open listings to exclusive listings should therefore be part of your business plan.

5.Staff training and development should be a regular weekly process. Even the most experienced salespeople will have issues to be developed and improved.

6.Technology has become a central part of the real estate business for both the agency and the individual salesperson. Up to date computers, mobile telephone technology, and database systems will be needed to support the sales team.

7.Build your property management portfolio wherever possible from the successful sales and leasing transactions that you undertake. It is a well-known fact that property management portfolio fees will assist the commercial agency to function over the long term during dips or troughs in the property market or economy. The property management portfolio will also become a saleable commodity if extra cash flow is required in the future within the agency.

When you plan your agency business well you can move forward with the right steps. Always test and measure your progress so you can see when something is not working; then take the right remedial action to fix it.?

Records tumble on first day of the Games

China ended the first day of the London Paralympics on top of the medal table but it was British cyclist Sarah Storey who stole the show on Thursday by storming to her eighth Paralympic gold.

Storey took the women's C5 individual 3km pursuit after a lightning-quick qualifying time that would have won her a non-disabled title.

The 34-year-old rider's winning performance, which opened the hosts' gold account, came amid a slew of new world bests in track cycling and swimming, as China took the first gold of the Games on the first day of competition.

Storey, a five-time Paralympic swimming gold medallist who switched sports for the Beijing Games in 2008, caught Poland's Anna Harkowska with just under half of the 12-lap race to go, giving her a third cycling gold.

The British cyclist earlier clocked a new world best of 3min 32.170sec, which would have won her silver at the World Championships earlier this year and the title at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup at the same venue in February.

That World Cup race, a test event for the Olympic Velodrome, was won by her British compatriot Joanna Rowsell in 3min 32.364sec. Rowsell took Olympic gold earlier this month in the team pursuit.

Storey, who was born without a functioning left hand and narrowly missed out on a place in Britain's Olympic squad, said: "I always thought that if I could get off to a great start it would set up the week and hopefully that's the case.

"To get the gold medal is a dream come true."

Britain's Royal Mail later confirmed it would produce a stamp in her honour, the first time ever that a set of stamps has been issued to celebrate Paralympic winners from the host country.

China won both races in the C1-2-3 pursuit, with Zeng Sini breaking the world record in qualifying, while Germany's Tobias Graf set a new C2 best as he took bronze in the men's event.

China ended the day with 15 medals, six of which were gold, ahead of Australia with nine medals including three golds.

The Aussies were boosted by Kieran Modra and guide rider Scott McPhee, who took the men's blind and visually impaired 4km tandem pursuit, beating Modra's previous world best.

Five world records tumbled in the swimming finals, with the highlight New Zealander Sophie Pascoe, who smashed the new best she set earlier in qualifying by more than three seconds in the final of the 200m SM10 individual medley.

In the men's equivalent, Benoit Huot of Canada shaved his own previous world best down to 2min 10.01secs.

Zheng Tao, meanwhile, finally beat the record set by Russia's Igor Plotnikov way back in 2004 in the men's S6 100m backstroke, while compatriot Lu Dong took the women's race, also in world record time, as China scooped three golds.

Brazil's Daniel Dias became the fastest man ever in the S5 50m freestyle.

Sergey Punko and Oxana Savchenko made it a Russian double in both S12 400m freestyle events.

Charles Rozoy gave France its first gold in the men's S8 100m butterfly and US swimmer Jessica Long took the women's race to give her an eighth Paralympic gold over three Games.

Britain's Jonathan Fox, who lowered his own S7 100m backstroke world record to 1min 9.86secs in qualifying, went on to secure the hosts' first gold in the pool, while Hungarian powerhouse Tamas Sors took the S9 100m butterfly.

In the women's race, South Africa's Natalie du Toit won the 11th gold in her Paralympic career -- even if she was disappointed with the time.

Du Toit, a dominant force over the last decade who became the first amputee to qualify for the Olympics, swimming the 10km open water race in Beijing, plans to race in seven events and is retiring after the Games.

But she ruled out staying on in the sport until the next Games in Rio de Janeiro in four years' time.

"No I'm done. It's very official. It's sad, but I walk away knowing I gave it everything," she said.

China's Zhang Cuiping earlier shot her way to the first gold of the Games in the women's 10m air rifle, scoring 104.9 for an overall score of 500.9, while Park Seakyun, of South Korea, won the men's 10m air pistol.

And there was double delight for German twins Carmen and Ramona Brussig, who both won judo gold in the women's -48kg and -52kg categories.

Illinois governor rejects plan to expand gambling | The Salt Lake ...

FILE - In this Aug. 17, 2012 file photo Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn speaks with reporters at the Illinois state Capitol in Springfield. On Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012, Quinn announced his plan to veto a bill to expand gambling, saying the proposed bill lacked sufficient regulatory oversight. (AP Photo/Seth Perlman, File)

Chicago ? Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday rejected a bill to expand gambling in Illinois that would have made way for a land-based casino in Chicago, saying the proposal lacked sufficient regulatory oversight.

With his two immediate predecessors in prison, the Chicago Democrat said integrity must be a hallmark of the gambling plan, which also proposed establishing four new riverboat casinos and allowing slot machines at racetracks.

The most glaring omission from the bill "is the absence of strict ethical standards and comprehensive regulatory oversight. Illinois should never settle for a gaming bill that includes loopholes for mobsters," Quinn said in a statement announcing the veto.

He urged legislators to work with him on its shortcomings, although the bill?s House sponsor said his attempts to meet with Quinn have been rebuffed. Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, predicted there would be enough House votes this fall to override Quinn?s veto.

At a suburban Chicago appearance late Tuesday morning, Quinn rejected that forecast.

"That veto will be sustained," he told reporters. "I think I did the right thing."

Supporters of the bill estimated the expansion could have brought in up to $1 billion a year, boost tourism and create 100,000 jobs for the state. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel supported the establishment of a city casino. Opponents meanwhile warned of market saturation and raised concerns about the social costs.

The proposal would have established a city-owned Chicago casino with spots for 4,000 people to gamble at once. It also would have added riverboat casinos in Danville, Park City, Rockford and an undecided location in Chicago?s south suburbs. Each riverboat casino would have had 1,600 gambling positions and allowed Illinois? 10 existing casinos to grow.

Quinn, who isn?t opposed to gambling on principle, had said all along that he wanted a bill with stronger ethical protections. That includes barring the gambling industry from making political contributions. He said the proposal has "too many defects" for him to consider using his amendatory veto powers to change it.

"It?s one thing if you had to make some technical changes here and there," Quinn said Tuesday. "This bill just falls way short of what the people of Illinois need when it comes to ethics in government."

story continues below

In his veto message, Quinn took aim at the proposed Chicago casino, claiming the bill would have allowed it to play by different rules. He said the Illinois Gaming Board wouldn?t have the same regulatory authority over the Chicago outlet as it holds over other casinos in the state and that the city casino would not have to follow the state?s procurement code in handing out contracts.

That would leave taxpayer-financed contracts "vulnerable to organized crime, unsavory influence and potentially overpriced vendors," Quinn wrote.

In earlier responses to the governor?s critique, lawmakers offered follow-up legislation to address some of the concerns. However that wouldn?t be considered unless the initial law is signed, and Quinn has said he?d rather get all the legislation signed at once.

Lang said he would seek an override in the fall legislative session and dismissed the suggestion that Quinn might be open to discussing differences with the legislation?s authors.

"The bottom line is he doesn?t want to sign a gaming bill," Lang said. "If he had language to propose, he would have proposed it."

Quinn also criticized the legislation for providing too little support for public education. Past gambling expansions have been designed to bring in more revenue for public services such as schools, but the 1991 law that created riverboat casinos was intended to help economically depressed cities.

Vimeo adds advanced uploading features, custom thumbnails and Dropbox integration

Last we heard, Vimeo was the one being integrated into a couple of Microsoft's photo and movie-making products, but now it's the video giant announcing a service integration of its own. Of course, as you can see above, we're talking about the recently announced Dropbox synthesis -- which will allow Vimeo users to upload vid content straight from the cloud locker behemoth, as well as save all original files to their account. Furthermore, Vimeo's also added new advanced uploading features that essentially allow uploads to be resumed, plus the ability to choose any frame and set it as a thumbnail -- a nice addition to those soundtrack tools from earlier this year. You can give these a try yourself now; in the meantime, however, we recommend checking out Vimeo's fresh feature-touting visuals after the break.

Tea Party pushes for change at convention

The Republican National Convention will be shortened one day by bad weather, but activists from the conservative Tea Party movement heralded advancing Tropical Storm Isaac as a timely symbol of big changes ahead after November's election.

"We are looking at a hurricane here in Florida," said Michele Bachmann, a Tea Party founder and conservative member of the House of Representatives, late Sunday to a rally Christian conservatives and Tea Party faithful on the margins of the convention.

"We're looking at a political hurricane," she said in a speech electrifying her supporters. "We're looking at a spiritual hurricane," she said, further whipping up the crowd.

The Tea Party -- a powerful Republican faction responsible in large part for the return of the House of Representatives to Republican control in 2010 -- is to play a relatively small role at this week's convention, which has been curtailed from a four-day gathering to just three here in the Gulf Coast city of Tampa.

But they made a show of force at the afternoon and evening of rallies and prayer meetings Sunday at a local mega-church -- an event meant to rouse the support of this most conservative of the Republican party's faithful.

"It's time for each of us to show up and suit up and stand up," Bachmann exhorted the crowd, to thunderous applause.

The meeting here, several miles away from the official Republican convention events downtown, provided a needed outlet for conservatives who have always been lukewarm toward former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who this week will formally named the party's presidential nominee.

The pre-convention gathering at The River at Tampa Bay Church, which was billed as a "unity rally," gave conservatives a chance to celebrate their considerable clout in the Republican party after scarcely three years' existence.

At a different forum earlier Sunday however, another Tea Party favorite was in a far less conciliatory mood.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, a perennial presidential contender, including his failed bid earlier this year, led a rally of devoted followers Sunday, in sounding almost defiant as he exhorted his followers to continue to press for greater change from within the party.

Paul, 77, who is leaving Congress at the end of this year, was not given a speaking role at this year's convention, despite being one of the Republicans' most prominent figures -- although he is to be celebrated with a video tribute on Tuesday.

"Believe me, we will get in the tent because we will become the tent eventually," he said.

"With the energy that we have, it seems to me they would be begging and pleading for us to come into the party," he said at a rally in a separate venue that preceded Tea Party rally.

Bachmann presidential ambitions fizzled out earlier this year, as did those of another speaker at Sunday's event -- former pizza business executive Herman Cain.

Bachmann faltered over a series of of gaffes and missteps, while Cain's candidacy unraveled largely because of a sex scandal and the perception that his campaign was driven by little more than his "9-9-9" tax reform program that he recited so often it became a subject of parody.

Both however remain beloved figures among conservative Republicans.

Of the roughly 2,000 people in attendance was Steve Haller, who said he drove all the way from Louisiana to be attend the Tea Party event, who said he hoped it would bring the various disparate factions of the party together.

"I expect unity from this night's event this is about bringing everyone together," he said, adding that the party's various factions needed to come coalesce around Romney's candidacy to ensure Democratic President Barack Obama's defeat this fall.

His aim is to bring the US down to its knees. I don't want that," he said.

"I'm not against Obama, I'm for America. Obama's the one who's against America," said Haller.

Under a red, white and blue umbrella, Maryann Kempf also said the Tea Party's message lined up with her own beliefs and said it played an essential role in Republican politics.

"Conservatism needs to rule the day to get this country back on track," she said.

The Tea Party is a constant reminder of conservatism and the need to stop spending," she said.

Christian girl held on blasphemy cannot read: Vatican

French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran on Saturday went to the defence of the young Pakistani girl accused of blasphemy, stressing that she "cannot read or write."

Interviewed on Radio Vatican, Tauran, who is in charge of interfaith dialogue in the Vatican, said "that before asserting a sacred text has been the object of scorn, it is worth checking the facts."

Rimsha, aged 11 to 16 according to different reports, is accused of burning pages from a children's religious instruction book inscribed with verses from the Koran, Islam's holy book. She was arrested and remanded in custody last Thursday.

But Tauran said that Rimsha "is a girl who cannot read or write and collects garbage to live on and picked up the fragments of the book which was in the middle of the rubbish."

"The more serious and tense the situation, the more necessary it is to have dialogue," added the cardinal, who was the late pope John Paul II's foreign minister.

He also told the daily Il Sussidiario, that he believed it "impossible in the light of the facts that the girl had tried to express her scorn for the sacred book of Islam."

The youngster reportedly has Down's Syndrome and her arrest has prompted outrage from rights groups and concern from Western governments.

Under Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws, insulting the prophet Mohammed is punishable by death and burning a sacred text by life imprisonment.

Rights groups say the legislation is often abused to settle personal vendettas.

Rishma had been due to appear in court on Saturday but police and her lawyer said Friday that the hearing had been put back to August 31.

Iran opens nonaligned summit with nuclear appeals

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran opened a world gathering of self-described nonaligned nations Sunday with a slap at the U.N. Security Council and an appeal to rid the world of nuclear weapons, even as Tehran faces Western suspicions that it is seeking its own atomic bombs.

Iran seeks to use the weeklong gathering ? capped by a two-day summit of Non-Aligned Movement leaders ? as a showcase of its global ties and efforts to challenge the influence of the West and its allies. Among those expected to attend include U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh, whose nation remains an important Iranian oil customer as Tehran battles Western sanctions over its nuclear program.

The 120-nation Non-Aligned Movement, a holdover from the Cold War's pull between East and West, is also seen by Iran and others as an alternative forum for current world discussions. Iran says it plans talks on a peace plan to end Syria's civil war, but no rebel factions will attend because of Tehran's close bonds with Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi opened the gathering by noting commitment to a previous goal from the nonaligned group, known as NAM, to remove the world's nuclear arsenals within 13 years.

"We believe that the timetable for ultimate removal of nuclear weapons by 2025, which was proposed by NAM, will only be realized if we follow it up decisively," he told delegates.

Iran insists it does not seek nuclear weapons. The U.S. and allies suspect that Tehran's uranium enrichment could eventually lead to warhead-level material. They have imposed ever-tighter sanctions on Iran's banking and oil exports in attempt to wring concessions.

Israel has said that it would consider military options if diplomacy and economic pressures fail to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Salehi criticized Israel for remaining outside the U.N. main treaty governing the spread of nuclear technology. Israel refused to discuss the full range of its military capabilities, but it is widely believed to have a nuclear arsenal.

Iran ally North Korea has withdrawn from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun arrived in Tehran Sunday to attend the meetings.

Outside the meeting site, Iran displayed three cars damaged by bomb blasts that Iran has blamed on agents from Britain, the U.S. and Britain. At least five members of Iranian scientific community, including nuclear experts, have been killed since early 2010 as part of a suspected covert war with its main foes.

Iran and proxies, in turn, have been linked by investigators to a series of attacks and plots on Israeli targets around the world.

Salehi also complained about the perception of the "falling" clout of the U.N.'s general membership at the expense of the "rising power of the U.N. Security Council," led by permanent members U.S., Britain, France, Russia and China.

"Creating a more democratic Security Council should be considered an important part of U.N. reforms," Salehi told the gathering.

Even before the first session got under way, however, a dispute flared over Palestinian envoys.

Iranian officials said a political leader of Tehran's ally Hamas has not been invited to the meeting in Tehran, contradicting Hamas claims that Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh was asked to come by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Hamas later Sunday that Haniyeh has dropped plans to attend.

The decision appeared aimed at avoiding a confrontation among Palestinians that could embarrass Hamas' Iranian backers. The office of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had warned he would not attend if rival Haniyeh also takes part.

The militant Hamas controls Gaza, while Abbas' Western-backed administration governs parts of the West Bank. Abbas' Foreign Minister Riad Malki also plans to travel to Tehran on Monday.

In weekly address, Obama defends Medicare reforms

President Obama is defending his Medicare reforms against Republican attacks, saying he would strengthen and preserve the program while his opponents would "effectively end Medicare as we know it."

In his weekly address, the president urges Americans to remember "what's really at stake when we talk about the future of Medicare."

"It's not about overheated rhetoric at election time. It's about a promise this country made to our seniors that says if you put in a lifetime of hard work, you shouldn't lose your home or your life savings just because you get sick," he says.

Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan have been attacking the president for cutting $716 billion from the popular entitlement program. "Over the last few weeks, there's been a lot of talk about Medicare, with a lot of accusations and misinformation flying around. So today I want to step back for a minute and share with you some actual facts and news about the program," Obama says.

What the Romney campaign has not mentioned is that Obama's cuts do not impact Medicare eligibility or benefits. Furthermore, the Ryan budget calls for the same cuts to Medicare that the GOP ticket is attacking the president for making in his health care bill.

"I've proposed reforms that will save Medicare money by getting rid of wasteful spending in the health care system and reining in insurance companies - reforms that won't touch your guaranteed Medicare benefits. Not by a single dime," he says.

Without calling out his GOP rival by name, the president says Republicans in Congress "want to turn Medicare into a voucher program."

"That means that instead of being guaranteed Medicare, seniors would get a voucher to buy insurance, but it wouldn't keep up with costs. As a result, one plan would force seniors to pay an extra $6,400 a year for the same benefits they get now. And it would effectively end Medicare as we know it," he says.

"Our seniors deserve better," Obama concludes. "I'm willing to work with anyone to keep improving the current system, but I refuse to do anything that undermines the basic idea of Medicare as a guarantee for seniors who get sick."

Pollination: with small rewards come bad results

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? The hawkmoth, a natural petunia pollinator, spends less time on Petunia lines that offer less nectar as a reward. That is the main result of a study carried out by Anna Brandenburg, a biologist at the universities of Berne and Neuch?tel with the support of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Plant Survival.

Published in the journal Current Biology, this study will be mentioned during the SOL 2012 -- Solanaceae conference, taking place from August 26 to 30 at the University of Neuch?tel.

Nectar plays a central role in most plant-pollinator relationships. It serves as a reward for services rendered by visitors that transport the plant's pollen. In nature, certain orchid species do not honour this tacit agreement. Instead, the plant economises these energy resources which it might be able to relocate to other plant structures for its own advantage: vigorous growth, greater seed production or improve on its pest defence mechanisms.

However, can this pollination with a reduced reward work for cultivated plants in terms of increased yield? Anna Brandenburg decided to test this hypothesis on petunia, an ideal model plant for garden vegetables since it belongs to the same family as the potato or tomato, the Solanaceae family.

After performing multiple crosses for this research, the biologist was able to create petunia lines that produced a volume of nectar three times less than that of the standard Petunia axillaris. At first glance, it seems that the plant comes out ahead, since Anna Brandenburg observed that manual pollination resulted in an increased seed production (20% to 30% more) in the low nectar plants compared to P. axillaris.

However, everything changes once the natural pollinators come into play. The hawkmoth (Manduca sexta) clearly spends less time visiting flowers offering a smaller reward, which consequently results in a considerable reduction in seed production. Thus, a simple self-serving action of the hawkmoth, namely the reduction of drinking time per flower, is sufficient to prevent the spread of cheating Petunias.

This situation, however, is reversible. By adding nectar to the flower varieties that produce less nectar, Anna Brandenburg was able to attract the pollinators' attention. Hence, with the hawkmoth staying longer on the plant, the quantity of seeds produced corresponds to the one that the biologist obtained with manual pollination.

Movie Review: Hit & Run | Vancity Buzz | Vancouver Blog

Vancouver Canada News Review it! Hit & Run

The problems with this film begins with its title ?Hit & Run? which might imply car chases, or car accidents. The film has chases but they aren?t particularly thrilling. I?ve had more excitement watching my neighbours kids crash their power-wheels than watching the flat and mundane non-sense that was happening on screen.

The plot for ?Hit & Run? is nothing we haven?t seen before. To sum it up, it is a comedy about a young couple (Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard) that risks it all when they leave their small town life and embark on a road trip that may lead them towards the opportunity of a lifetime. Their ?fast-paced? road trip grows awkwardly complicated when they are chased by a friend from the past (Bradley Cooper), a federal marshal (Tom Arnold), and a band of misfits.

Shepard plays Charlie Bronson aka Yul Perkins, a reformed getaway driver currently in the witness protection program located in the middle of back-road country California. Annie, his girlfriend played by real life fianc? Kristian Bell, is a teacher who gets a job interview at UCLA and needs to travel to Los Angeles. L.A. is the last place Charlie wants to go, but feeling the need to overcome his fears, Charlie sets his mind on driving Annie to her interview and will stop at nothing to get there.

Annie, having no idea about Charlie?s past and the trouble he left waiting for him in Los Angeles, quickly realizes they are being chased by her ex-boyfriend, Gil (Michael Rosenbaum). Gil has been keeping tabs on Annie and is convinced that Charlie is a murderer. In an effort to save Annie, Gil contacts Charlie?s old gang members which includes Alex (Bradley Cooper), and tells them his location. Soon Gil and his brother Terry (Jess Rowland), join the chase with Alex ? who has a bone to pick with his former getaway driver regarding money and his Filipino cellmate.

The movie has some funny parts, but the comedy is very low brow. Kristian Bell?s character is a ?UCLA qualified? teacher, but for some reason she is dating a ?redneck? that uses words like ?fag?, and has no moral compass. Bell?s acting is weak and unbelievable at times, especially when the couple squabbles about nonsense. Dax Shepard tends to be annoying at points and doesn?t play as well on the big screen like he does on TV.? His character in this film is almost identical to the one in his other flop ?Let?s go to prison?. He wrote most of the material for the film in just under three months and it shows. The onscreen performance is lacking, the jokes are very youth oriented and will not appeal to anyone with a grade twelve education. The only thing keeping this film together is the comedic support from Tom Arnold, Beau Bridges, Michael Rosenbaum, Jess Rowland and Kristin Chenoweth.

Tom Arnold plays a marshal named Randy assigned to protect Charlie. He joins the chase trying to catch up to Charlie thinking he is in desperate need of his services. A lot of people don?t like Arnold?s style of comedy and though this might not be his best role, I did enjoy his character over Shepards. Bradley Cooper plays an interesting antagonist with his ensemble of sunglasses, track suits, and the beautiful Joy Bryant (Honey). It?s a different role for Bradley Cooper but works in an offbeat sort of way.? Spoiler: Sorry ladies, but if you are going to watch this film for ?hot Brad?, he is nowhere to be found.

?Hit & Run? moves in multiple directions trying to emulate classics such as ?Eat My Dust!? or ?Smokey and the Bandit? but just can?t achieve it. The few chase scenes that do take place are pathetic. Mostly just cars doing donuts and frantic swerving, all shortcut editing and no gusto ? much like the overall feel of the film. I can give credit for Dax using his own vehicles and doing his own ?stunt driving?, but I?m sure the film would have been much more satisfying if he didn?t.

If you are seeing this film because the trailers say ?like the Hangover? ? It?s not. If you are seeing this film because the trailers say, ?like the Fast and the Furious? ? It?s not. Most of the ?good? scenes in this film were shown in the trailer, and while there are moments that seem smart and promising, they come along too rarely to fulfill any actual promise.

Overall this film should have gone straight to DVD. I give ?Hit & Run? a 4/10, and even this might be too much.

From Medical Xpress?..

To evaluate the quality of dietary intake methods and reporting, Tracy Burrows, Ph.D., of the University of Newcastle in Australia, and colleagues conducted a systematic review of 31 studies, including 23 reporting energy intake, 20 reporting macronutrient intakes, and 10 reporting food intake outcomes.

The researchers found the overall quality of dietary intake methods reporting to be rated as poor in 52 percent of studies, with only three studies rated as excellent. In these studies the most commonly used methods of assessing diet included the food diary (13), 24-hour recall (five), food frequency questionnaire (four), and dietary questionnaire (four). Food frequency questionnaires were rated as being of higher quality than food diaries or 24-hour recall.

Armstrong won't fight USADA charges

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Thursday night it will strip Lance Armstrong of his unprecedented seven Tour de France titles after he declared he was finished fighting the drug charges that threaten his legacy as one of the greatest cyclists of all time.

Travis Tygart, USADA's chief executive, said Armstrong would also be hit with a lifetime ban on Friday.

Still to be heard from was the sport's governing body, the International Cycling Union, which had backed Armstrong's legal challenge to USADA's authority.

Armstrong, who retired last year, declined to enter USADA's arbitration process - his last option - because he said he was weary of fighting accusations that have dogged him for years. He has consistently pointed to the hundreds of drug tests that he has passed as proof of his innocence during his extraordinary run of Tour titles stretchingfrom1999-2005.

''There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, ''Enough is enough.'' For me, that time is now,'' Armstrong said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. He called the USADA investigation an ''unconstitutional witch hunt.''

''I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999,'' he said. ''The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today - finished with this nonsense.''

USADA reacted quickly and treated Armstrong's decision as an admission of guilt, hanging the label of drug cheat on an athlete who was a hero to thousands for overcoming life-threatening testicular cancer and for his foundation's support for cancer research.

''It is a sad day for all of us who love sport and athletes,'' Tygart said. ''It's a heartbreaking example of win at all costs overtaking the fair and safe option. There's no success in cheating to win.''

Tygart said the agency can strip the Tour titles, though Armstrong disputed that as he insisted his decision is not an admission of drug use, but a refusal to enter an arbitration process he believes is unfair.

''USADA cannot assert control of a professional international sport and attempt to strip my seven Tour de France titles,'' he said. ''I know who won those seven Tours, my teammates know who won those seven Tours, and everyone I competed against knows who won those seven Tours.''

USADA maintains that Armstrong has used banned substances as far back as 1996, including the blood-booster EPO and steroids as well as blood transfusions - all to boost his performance.

The 40-year-old Armstrong walked away from the sport in 2011 without being charged following a two-year federal criminal investigation into many of the same accusations he faces from USADA. The federal probe was closed in February, but USADA announced in June it had evidence Armstrong used banned substances and methods - and encouraged their use by teammates. The agency also said it had blood tests from 2009 and 2010 that were ''fully consistent'' with blood doping.

Included in USADA's evidence were emails written by Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service teammate Floyd Landis, who was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title after a positive drug test. Landis' emails to a USA Cycling official detailed allegations of a complex doping program on the team.

USADA also said it had 10 former Armstrong teammates ready to testify against him. Other than suggesting they include Landis and Tyler Hamilton, both of whom have admitted to doping offenses, the agency has refused to say who they are or specifically what they would say.

''There is zero physical evidence to support (the) outlandish and heinous claims. The only physical evidence here is the hundreds of (doping) controls I have passed with flying colors,'' Armstrong said.

Armstrong sued USADA in Austin, where he lives, in an attempt to block the case and was supported by the UCI. A judge threw out the case on Monday, siding with USADA despite questioning the agency's pursuit of Armstrong in his retirement.

''USADA's conduct raises serious questions about whether its real interest in charging Armstrong is to combat doping, or if it is acting according to less noble motives,'' such as politics or publicity, U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks wrote.

Now the ultra-competitive Armstrong has done something virtually unthinkable for him: He has quit before a fight is over.

''Today I turn the page. I will no longer address this issue, regardless of the circumstances. I will commit myself to the work I began before ever winning a single Tour de France title: serving people and families affected by cancer, especially those in underserved communities,'' Armstrong said.

Armstrong could have pressed his innocence in USADA's arbitration process, but the cyclist has said he believes most people have already made up their minds about whether he's a fraud or a persecuted hero.

It was a stunning move for an athlete who built his reputation on not only beating cancer, but forcing himself through grueling offseason workouts no one else could match, then crushing his rivals in the Alps and the Pyrenees.

Although he had already been crowned a world champion and won individual stages at the Tour de France, Armstrong was still relatively unknown in the U.S. until he won the epic race for the first time in 1999. It was the ultimate comeback tale: When diagnosed with cancer, doctors had given him less than a 50 percent chance of survival before surgery and brutal cycles of chemotherapy saved his life.

Armstrong's riveting victories, his work for cancer awareness and his gossip-page romances with rocker Sheryl Crow, fashion designer Tory Burch and actress Kate Hudson made him a figure who transcended sports.

His dominance of the Tour de France elevated the sport's popularity in America to unprecedented levels. His story and success helped sell millions of the ''Livestrong'' plastic yellow wrist bracelets, and enabled him to enlist lawmakers and global policymakers to promote cancer awareness and research. His Lance Armstrong Foundation has raised nearly $500 million since its founding in 1997.

Created in 2000, USADA is recognized by Congress as the official anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States. Its investigators joined U.S. agents during the federal probe, and Tygart had dismissed Armstrong's lawsuit as an attempt at ''concealing the truth.'' He said the agency is motivated by one goal - exposing cheaters in sport.

Others close to Armstrong were caught up in the charges: Johan Bruyneel, the coach of Armstrong's teams, and three members of the medical staff and a consultant were also charged. Bruyneel is taking his case to arbitration, while two medical team staffers and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari didn't formally contest the charges and were issued lifetime ban by USADA. Ferrari later said he was innocent.

In a sport rife with cheaters, Armstrong has been under constant suspicion since the 1990s from those who refused to believe he was a clean rider winning cycling's premier event against a field of doped-up competition.

He had tense public disputes with USADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, some former teammates and assistants and even Greg LeMond, the first American to win the Tour de France.

Through it all, Armstrong vigorously denied any and all hints, rumors and direct accusations he was cheating. He had the blazing personality, celebrity and personal wealth needed to fight back with legal and public relations battles to clear his name - and he did, time after time.

Armstrong won his first Tour at a time when doping scandals had rocked the race. He was leading the race when a trace amount of a banned anti-inflammatory corticosteroid was found in his urine; cycling officials said he was authorized to use a small amount of a cream to treat saddle sores.

After Armstrong's second victory in 2000, French judicial officials investigated his Postal Service team for drug use. That investigation ended with no charges, but the allegations kept coming.

Armstrong was criticized for his relationship with Ferrari, who was banned by Italian authorities over doping charges in 2002. Former personal and team assistants accused Armstrong of having steroids in an apartment in Spain and disposing of syringes that were used for injections.

In 2004, a Dallas-based promotions company initially refused to pay him a $5 million bonus for winning his sixth Tour de France because it wanted to investigate allegations raised by media in Europe. Testimony in that case included former teammate Frankie Andreu and his wife, Betsy, saying Armstrong told doctors during his 1996 cancer treatments that he had taken a cornucopia of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs.

Two books published in Europe, ''L.A. Confidential'' and ''L.A. Official,'' also raised doping allegations and, in 2005, French magazine L'Equipe reported that retested urine samples from the 1999 Tour showed EPO use.

Armstrong fought every accusation with denials and, in some cases, lawsuits against the European media outlets that reported them.

But he showed signs that he was tiring of the never-ending questions. Armstrong retired (for the first time) in 2005 and almost immediately considered a comeback before deciding to stay on the sidelines, in part, because he didn't want to keep answering doping questions.

''I'm sick of this,'' Armstrong said in 2005. ''Sitting here today, dealing with all this stuff again, knowing if I were to go back, there's no way I could get a fair shake - on the roadside, in doping control, or the labs.''

Three years later, Armstrong was 36 and itching to ride again. He came back to finish third in the 2009 Tour de France.

Armstrong raced in the Tour again in 2010, under the cloud of the federal criminal investigation. Early last year, he quit the sport for good, but made a brief return as a triathlete until the USADA investigation shut him down.

During his sworn testimony in the dispute over the $5 million bonus, Armstrong said he wouldn't take performance enhancing drugs because he had too much to lose.

''(The) faith of all the cancer survivors around the world. Everything I do off the bike would go away, too,'' Armstrong said then. ''And don't think for a second I don't understand that. It's not about money for me. Everything. It's also about the faith that people have put in me over the years. So all of that would be erased.''
