A new 'first' - Slice of Lemon

I drove down to Northern Virginia from New York yesterday for my sister?s baby shower this weekend, which I?m throwing?kind of. I mean I designed the invitations and mailed them and picked up the cupcakes and planned the menu. But since I couldn?t get home until yesterday evening,? Little BFF?s mom, my mom and 2 of our Aunt(ie)s are doing most of the cooking.

See the thing about trying to plan a party in the Enayatulla family (since anytime after 2006) means one sister in the Caribbean while the other is in Los Angeles, then one sister in Miami while the other is in Northern Virginia, then one sister in New York while the other is in North Carolina; all the while one mom in Northern Virginia calling and texting to try and give you a visual of the 2 tablecloths she?s looking at as possible party decor.

It can get a little overwhelming.

But it?s not just the distance that creates a party-planning challenge it?s also everyone?s busy schedules. Uzma?s in the first year of her pediatrics residency, I just relaunched Dress Well and my mom, in addition to her full-time job as a teacher, also tutors, volunteers and takes religion classes all week.

So planning a party can go from YAY! to OH MY GOD! in about 6 days.

Of course I?m excited about tomorrow and excited to see how much bigger and rounder Uzma?s belly has gotten since the last time she texted me pictures. And obviously I?m excited about cupcakes. I?m not going to lie, I was *this close* to eating one in the car on my drive home yesterday.

Tomorrow?s party has a theme, but it?s not a gender one. Uzma and BIL decided pretty early on that they wanted a SURPRISE! baby and are waiting until Uzma delivers in December to find out the gender. I don?t think I?m going to fully grasp the fact that MY SISTER IS HAVING A BABY until that baby is here, in person, in all his or her smallness and making funny faces at me.

Since this is my sister?s first baby, and my first niece or nephew, and my parents? first grandbaby I kind of feel like we?re all in this together. And it?s sort of neat that our family gets to experience something new together after so many years. When you?re growing up there are so many milestones your parents look forward too. And then as we get older there are milestones we look forward to that our parents are a little scared of. And then a few years go buy with various life adjustments and everyone sort of coasts for a while. And then there?s this brand new thing: A BABY! that really sort of reminds everyone what it?s like to go through a first as a family again. And like those earlier years where kids are itching to fast forward and parents can?t seem to find pause I think everyone will be digesting this first in their own way.

I?m excited for December and can?t stop thinking about how there?s going to be a BRAND NEW HUMAN who?s just suddenly a part of the family. A new life is coming and he or she will become a permanent fixture for all of us. And I find that equal parts miraculous and mind-boggling, crazy and? exciting.

Of course it also means I have an excuse to eat 3 different types of cupcakes in one day. So I say, Welcome Permanent Fixture! Now please pass the chocolate one.
