Tickets Selling Fast to Tauranga's Premier Business Networking Dinner ? Kitchen Hell

The Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise is urging people to get in quick if they wish to attend next month?s Kitchen Hell fundraiser, as nearly all of the 140 tickets have been snapped up with only 25 remaining.

President of Tauranga Sunrise Rotary, Warren Banks, says Kitchen Hell is an opportunity for people to dine with the movers and shakers of the Tauranga business community and to make a huge difference to two local charities.? All proceeds are?going to disaster relief organisation ShelterBox and anti-poverty charity Cambodia Charitable Trust.

?Kitchen Hell is one the best business networking events in Tauranga, because you rotate tables at each course allowing diners to interact with three different groups of people while feasting on culinary delights,? says Banks.

The event is to be held on Saturday 17th November 2012 and will see 14 chefs each prepare three-course meals for their allocated tables of ten. The menu will be kept under wraps until the night of the event. Each dish can be rated, with feedback provided to the chefs at the end of the evening.

Among the chefs showing off their culinary skills at Kitchen Hell are Steffi Mueller, a German chef who authored the cookbook ?Keep It Simple? and Stephen Wilson, who honed his skills working in top kitchens in Paris.? Mueller is also donating to both charities $5 from each book sold on her website (www.motivation4u.co.nz, code KH2012) from now until the end of November.?

Chef Peter Blakeway, who is a regular feature on TVOne Breakfast?s cooking segments and set to release his own cookbook, is also donating his time and expertise to assist with raising funds for the worthy causes.
One of the two charities to benefit from the proceeds raised at the event is ShelterBox, a non-profit organisation that delivers emergency shelter and supplies kits to people affected by disasters worldwide.

Funds will also be donated to the Cambodia Charitable Trust. This charity works to assist Cambodian women and children escape the trap of extreme poverty and slavery by providing housing, healthcare and education.

Banks says the organisation is proud to be hosting the annual event, which started in 2010.
?Last year we raised over $5,700, sponsoring three ShelterBoxes and donating $2,800 to the Cambodia Charitable Trust,? says Banks.

Kitchen Hell is being held at Tauranga Girls? College, 22nd Avenue, Tauranga. Tickets to the event are $60 per person. There will be a cash bar and eftpos available, as well as raffle prizes and games throughout the evening. (AP) ? Anthony Davis, the overall No. 1 draft pick of the New Orleans, has left Friday night's game against Utah and is being tested for a possible concussion and will not return.

Davis had eight points ? all on dunks in the first half ? six rebounds and two blocks. He was injured with 4:51 left in the first half. The Hornets released an official statement that he will be out for the rest of the game. The Hornets trailed 41-40 at halftime.

Davis, who led Kentucky to the NCAA championship last season, scored 21 points in his regular-season debut on Wednesday in the Hornets' 99-95 loss to San Antonio. He hit 6 of 12 shots, made all nine of his free throw attempts and grabbed seven rebounds.

Sitting still or going hunting: Which works better?

Friday, November 2, 2012

For the kinds of animals that are most familiar to us ? ones that are big enough to see ? it's a no-brainer: Is it better to sit around and wait for food to come to you, or to move around and find it? Larger animals that opt to sit around aren't likely to last long.

But for bacteria out in the ocean, the question is a far more complicated one.

Oceanographers have long assumed that because turbulence distributes nutrients uniformly through the water, and because the ability of tiny organisms to move around is insignificant compared to this turbulence, there was no reason for such creatures to move at all. Sea-dwelling bacterial life, they believed, should consist just of static feeders.

That view has now been upended by research conducted by Roman Stocker, an associate professor in MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and John R. Taylor, a former MIT postdoc who is now a lecturer in applied mathematics and theoretical physics at Cambridge University. It turns out that swimmers and passive feeders each have some advantages ? but also pay some costs ? in food gathering, depending on how fast the swimmers swim and how strong the turbulence is.

The results, based on a computer model that for the first time considers nutrient competition by bacteria in a turbulent flow, have just been published in Science.

Until now, most studies of microorganism behavior have taken place in static environments, such as a test tube or Petri dish, without regard to fluid flow. "Marine bacteria have mostly been studied in isolation from the motion of the seawater they live in," Stocker says. These new computer simulations, which model both how water flows and how bacteria in that water behave, have now made it possible to study the foraging of bacteria in dynamic environments, similar to the turbulent waters they naturally inhabit.

"We're working at the interface between microbiology and fluid dynamics," Stocker says. The new work has produced the first study of how this turbulent environment affects the choice of bacterial feeding strategy.

While it's true that ocean currents and turbulence are orders of magnitude faster than anything that even the most energetic microorganisms can achieve, it turns out that these creatures' motions are nevertheless very important, Stocker and Taylor found. That's because the microenvironment a bacterium occupies ? the microliters of water surrounding it and representing its foraging ground ? is transported en masse in those flows, so even small rates of swimming can make a big difference in accessing food.

Although swimming toward a food source can confer some advantage in the amount of food consumed, it also carries a penalty: Swimming uses energy, requiring more food. "As you swim faster, you do better in terms of food uptake, but you also pay a price," Stocker says.

Because of that tradeoff, the researchers found, for any given intensity of turbulence there is an optimal swimming speed; anything faster than this produces diminishing returns.

"What we did was to quantify the cost-benefit trade-off," Stocker says. "We considered the pluses and minuses, and found that the swimming costs matter." In general, the results showed, the optimal swimming speed for marine bacteria is about 60 micrometers per second, which is "in very nice agreement with what's observed for the actual swimming speed of many marine bacteria," Stocker adds.

Turbulence stirs nutritious material through the water in much the same way as it stirs cream into a cup of coffee: First forming filaments, then mixing them away. "Something similar happens ? on a tiny scale ? when bursts of organic matter enter gently moving water," Taylor says. "The swirls of organic matter are easily accessed by swimming bacteria, which surround and absorb it."

But the swimmers' advantage is short-lived. In turbulent seawater, after several seconds, nutrients are uniformly distributed ? meaning there's as much available for the stationary microbes as there is for the swimmers.

Most of this organic matter is derived from phytoplankton, tiny organisms that capture sunlight and convert it into carbohydrates. In fact, phytoplankton in the ocean are responsible for about as much photosynthesis as all of Earth's terrestrial plant matter combined, so understanding their role in the global carbon cycle is crucially important for understanding everything from the food chains that sustain the world's fisheries to the complexities of global climate change.

As part of their analysis, Stocker and Taylor conducted detailed simulations of exactly how a patch of nutrient-rich material, derived from dying phytoplankton or other sources, disperses in turbulent water. What starts out as a compact blob "gets stretched out, stirred, and explodes into a tangled web of filaments," Stocker says.

That's when the swimming advantage is greatest: The filaments provide lots of nutrient-rich zones to swim toward. But then the window of opportunity closes. "Eventually it all gets homogenized," he says. "Once it's mixed, swimming makes no more sense".

How fast that happens depends on the strength of turbulence. Stocker and Taylor found that very high or very low turbulence provides the least advantage for the swimmers. But for a range in between, they had a substantial edge over their inert relatives.

The basic understanding of these microscopic processes could have large-scale importance, Stocker says. As the Earth's climate warms, turbulence might become weaker in the ocean, which could affect which species dominate the competition for nutrients at the base of the food chain. Species composition, in turn, can dictate how much carbon is channeled to organisms higher in the food chain, shaping the productivity of a marine environment.

Egypt's Coptic church prepares to choose pope

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's ancient Coptic Christian church will pick a new pope in an elaborate Sunday ceremony in which a blindfolded altar boy will draw from a crystal chalice holding the names of three senior clerics, one of whom will replace the charismatic patriarch who led the church for 40 years.

Many Christians, estimated to make up 10 percent of Egypt's 83 million people, fear for their future amid the rising tide of Islamism in the wake of the 2011 ouster of Hosni Mubarak. Earlier this year, Pope Shenouda III died at age of 88, increasing the sense of insecurity felt by many who had known him as patriarch for all or most of their lives.

At the televised ceremony held in the Coptic Cathedral in Cairo, acting Pope Pachomios laid the three names in plastic balls inside a chalice before starting Mass. The drawing by the blindfolded boy is believed to reflect God's will in the choice.

"We will pray that God will choose the good shepherd," Pachomios told the packed cathedral as he sealed the chalice with red wax before laying it on the altar during Mass.

The process of electing a new pope began weeks ago, when a committee from the church narrowed the list of potential candidates from 17 down to five monks and bishops. On Monday, about 2,400 clergymen and church notables drew up a short list of three: Bishop Raphael, 54, once an aide to the late Pope Shenouda; Bishop Tawadros, 59, an aide to the acting pope, and Father Raphael Ava Mina, the oldest among them at 70, a monk in a monastery near Alexandria and a student of the pope who preceded Shenouda.

The shortlisted names are considered consensus candidates? clergymen with no history of taking part in disputes within the church or clashes with other groups, including Islamists. The bishops were chosen only from those without a diocese, to avoid any risk of favoritism.

The papal election comes during a shift in Christian attitudes toward their relation to the state. For years, Christians largely relied on the church to secure protection for their rights, using Shenouda's close relationship with Mubarak.

But Shenouda had longstanding critics within the community who asked why a cleric should act as an intermediary between them and the state. Following the uprising and the pope's death, more Copts have been emboldened to act outside the church to independently demand rights, better representation and freedom of worship.

None of the candidates are attending the Sunday ceremony, and are instead praying in their respective monasteries.

The altar boy will also be chosen from among 12 candidates already vetted from among hundreds of candidates by the church and selected in a draft.

The new pope faces tremendous challenges as the country's transition to democracy is marred by a deep rift between increasingly politically powerful Islamist groups, from which the country's new president hails, and the liberal and secularist groups who were initially behind the revolt that ousted Mubarak last year.

At the center of the political squabbling in Egypt is the role of Islam in the country's new constitution, currently being drafted. The Christians, along with liberal and secularists, oppose demands by Islamists to increase the role of Islamic Shariah law.

Egypt's Coptic Christians have long complained of discrimination by the state and the country's Muslim majority. Clashes with Muslims have occasionally broken out, often sparked by church construction, land disputes or Muslim-Christian love affairs.

The prospects of a stronger role for Islamic law in legislation increase the community's concern of further marginalization, or of curtailing of their rights of worship and expression.

Late Saturday, Pachomios said during a popular TV program on the private station al-Nahar that Christians have never held senior state posts or leading positions such as university deans in Egypt's modern history. He also insisted there will be no clause in the constitution allowing state monitoring of the church's finances, a demand often made by Islamists

Massachusetts May Soon Change How the Nation Dies

Yes and no. Most people are not medical experts and, shouldn't have to become so just to die with some dignity.

The thing is, what kills one person may not kill another and most things that you can eaisly get your hands on, and even most prescriptions, are within dosage ranges that are quite safe. Yes, you can kill yourself many ways, but, many of those ways are less effective than you might think.

I personally knew a guy who tried to off himself with barbituates. He failed, woke up several days later. This is actually fairly common with that route.

Also many terminally ill patients are in no condition to do that research and administer the drugs without help.

Which is why, I think we really need the second... Doctors able to help.

I plan to vote for this one. I have worked among the medical community (at MGH no less), I have been there when my family had to have stern words with doctors who somehow interpreted our grandfather's DNR order as "Recessitate and put on a ventilator".

This is such an important issue for so many reasons. So many people in ongoing pain that don't need to be, so many families that need to move on. I hate to bring it to money but.... 50% of health care costs are spent in the last 5 years of life.....and for what? The fact that so many doctors opt to not have chemo and opt to die rather than hang on like so many of their patients are made to should say something.

Don't get me wrong, if someone wants to fight to the biter end, and get as many waking moments as possible, regardless of their quality, more power to them. However, what compassion is there in forcing people to go on living who have nothing to look forward to except deterioration in a bed?

I honestly think Bill Hicks described the situation best in his comical suggestion that we use terminally ill people as stunt doubles in action films. "Do you want your grandmother to die in a sterile hospital bed, he translucent skin so thin you can see the last beat of her heart, or do you want her to meet Chuck Norris?.... wow Chuck just kicked her head clear off, my grandma is no longer in pain...this is the best movie ever!"

Naturally Occurring Asbestos Alert in some CA National Forests ...

Mt. Shasta @ End of the road: view from above the 7800' Old Ski Bowl parking lot 9/27/12

I was hoping to venture south along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway and hike/summit the 14,162ft Mt. Shasta in California this past Sept. But in checking the Shasta-Trinity National Forest (NF) site for alerts (always a good thing to do), I came upon one, listed last, about ?Serpentine and Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA)?. It clicked through to a page with a long list of info and maps but no top line info. How many would proceed to click through and read all the info embedded in that list I wondered? Well, knowing that asbestos is a carcinogen, I did ? and glad I did. Mt. Shasta turned out to be a big pile of dirt. Plus, there were no NOA warning signs at the trailheads. So knowing what I?m about to share, I took a few pictures and left. As I drove away, my mind raced with questions: Why weren?t there any NOA warning signs? Are there cancer cases attributed to NOA? How harmful is NOA to visitors of national forests? What about us folks & park employees who practically live outdoors all summer? etc, etc?. I started looking online for answers. Seeing as Nov. is Lung Cancer Awareness month and most of the studies appear to have been undertaken in or around the last decade, I decided to share what I?ve learned so far. It?s just basic info (there?s plenty online for those wanting more technical, scientific info) but hopefully, this is enough for folks to get the gist of the issue, start a conversation and maybe do something about it.

Starting with the Shasta-Trinity site, there?s a 2008 ?NOA Fact Sheet? that describes the landscape: ?Naturally occurring asbestos?has been found to be present in the majority of counties in California. It is commonly found in ultramafic rock formations, including serpentine, and in the soils where these rock types are located. Serpentine, the California State Rock, is found widely throughout the state.? The U.S. Geological Survey and the California Geological Survey have confirmed that NOA can be found in at least 45 of CA?s 58 counties (8 other counties contain ultramafic rocks, serpentinite or fibrous amphibole suggesting the possible presence of NOA). The Fact Sheet indicates that when present, naturally occurring asbestos may pose health risks if released into the air or soil (by being crushed or broken through natural weathering or through human activities) and then inhaled or ingested.

Among the health risks referred to are lung cancer and mesothelioma (a cancer that affects the lungs, heart and abdominal cavity). Proof that NOA can cause mesothelioma was published by UC Davis researchers in 2005. In March 2009, the International Agency for Research on Cancer reconfirmed that all forms of asbestos can cause mesothelioma. However, the risk of developing it is dose dependent and, as the UC Davis team found, ?directly related to residential proximity to a source of ultramafic rock?. In another study, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) went on to estimate the increased risk of cancer based on OHV/hiking scenarios?and frequency of visits -e.g. up to 12 visits per year for recreational scenarios, and up to 120 visits per year for workers (which would include outdoor enthusiasts like us).?That study took place at the Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA) in CA which has been closed to the public since May 2008. According to the EPA, the 75,000 acre CCMA in San Benito and Fresno counties includes a serpentinite rock body containing a 31,000 acre outcrop of NOA. It is the largest asbestos deposit in the U.S.?The EPA found that at the CCMA, ?There was no combination of scenario, toxicity value, or visits per year that was below the lower end of EPA?s acceptable risk range, i.e. risks less than 1 in 1,000,000. Only?Day Use Hiking?had risk calculations within the acceptable range.? The International Environmental Research Foundation (IERF) has challenged many of those findings and concluded that riding in moist conditions was below EPA?s ?virtually safe level?. However, they agreed that ?motorcycle riding in dry condition at CCMA raises dust in excess of the asbestos permissible exposure limit?. The IERF review was commissioned by the CA State Parks? Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division (OHVD).?We should note that both sides have come under additional scrutiny and criticism. Those who challenge the EPA and believe the area can be enjoyed safely have undertaken efforts to re-open the CCMA.?We aren?t aware of any others studying risks associated with these types of recreational scenarios in national forests containing NOA. Would we be alone in wanting to see some?

With these risks in mind, here?s what the Fact Sheet advises: ?National forest visitors wishing to reduce their potential exposure to naturally occurring asbestos should consult the maps produced by the Forest Service or the State of California which identify the currently known areas of ultramafic and serpentine rock and naturally occurring asbestos?. I did and found this could be quite time consuming so included some of them below (links are at the end). They indicate the presence of NOA and/or former asbestos mines in all of the following National Forests in CA: Angeles (only mines), Eldorado, Klamath, Lassen, Los Padres, Mendocino, Plumas, San Bernardino, Sequoia (only mines), Shasta-Trinity, Sierra (only mines), Six Rivers, Tahoe. We went back and forth between the maps and the NF websites and were troubled to see NOA alerts missing from websites for the individual NFs we just listed (except Mendocino?s whose link for the NOA Alert points to the wrong info as of today -we let them know so they can fix it). Only the Shasta-Trinity NF and USFS? Pacific Southwest Region websites provide info on NOA insofar as national forest lands are concerned. Also, as noted before, if I had not checked these sites, there would have been no signs at Mt. Shasta warning me of the presence of NOA. Anyone know if other NFs with NOA have warning signs?

?

As the first map above shows, CA isn?t alone in this. NOA has been found in more than 2 dozen U.S. states including the Pacific NW. Focusing on WA, we did a search and didn?t come across any NOA Alerts for our national forests. However, on Asbestos.com where you can search by state, they show NOA in WA?s northeast above Spokane in the Okanogan highlands and central Cascades around Wenatchee and Ellensburg (where chrysotile asbestos is present in serpentine rock deposits in mountainous areas). Asbestos was also once mined in WA at two sites in Lyman, Skagit County and near Alta Lake, Okanogan County. Lastly, we found WA state and Whatcom County Dept. of Health advisories for NOA resulting from the Sumas Mountain landslide (near the headwaters of Swift Creek) releasing NOA-containing sediment into that creek and into

white asbestos deposits in Swift Creek

the Sumas River near the town of Nooksack, past the town of Sumas and into Canada. The zone is west-northwest of one of our favorites, Mt. Baker. So note to self: close car windows and vents and don?t stop to play in the pretty white stuff that?s asbestos on the shores of Swift Creek and Sumas River if we ever drive through that zone on the way to Mt. Baker. Hopefully, there are warning signs there to remind us.

As we read about the Pacific NW, we began to wonder if hiking our beloved volcanoes and breathing volcanic ash and dust could pose risks. Well, we found a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention blog about Erionite, ?a naturally occurring mineral that belongs to a group of silicate minerals called zeolites?[and is] found in volcanic ash that has been altered by weathering and ground water?.Disturbance of this material can generate airborne fibers with physical properties and health effects similar to asbestos. For example, it has long been known that residents of some Turkish villages where erionite-containing rock was used to construct homes have a remarkably high risk for development of malignant mesothelioma. Until recently, erionite was not generally considered to be a potential hazard in North America, in part because relatively little risk for exposure was seen. However, evidence has slowly accumulated linking exposure to erionite with serious adverse health effects in North America.? Erionite is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, labeling it as a cancer-causing agent too. Like NOA, deposits are present in many Western states (see map image above). However, the most talked about areas are N. Dakota where gravel dug from pits containing erionite were used to pave roads since the ?80s and caused lung damage, and UT, Mexico and Turkey where there have been instances of erionite-related illnesses. After that map was released, erionite was also found in WA. However, I haven?t been able to find any sources confirming it?s in Cascades volcanic ash. If you know of any, we?d like to hear from you. We hope future research doesn?t link it to our volcanoes because the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences reported that ?erionite is much more potent than asbestos in causing malignant mesothelioma?. As for other effects of breathing volcanic ash, there is a published study: The respiratory health hazards of volcanic ash: a review for volcanic risk mitigation.

So here are tips from the Fact Sheet for reducing your exposure to NOA (and erionite):

-Be aware of windy conditions and avoid dusty conditions to reduce exposure

-Limit dust generating activities, such as riding offroad vehicles, riding bicycles, running or hiking, riding horses or moving livestock, etc.

-Avoid handling or disturbing loose asbestos containing rock types

-Drive slowly over unpaved roads, with windows and vents closed, to minimize dust generation (California Air Resources Board recommends that vehicle speeds not exceed 15 miles per hour on unpaved roads where asbestos is present)

-Avoid or minimize the tracking of dust into vehicles [and homes]

-Do not use compressed air for cleaning your vehicles after your visit. Use a wet rag to clean the interior? and, as other sources suggest, a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter vacuum.

We all know that kicking up dust is unavoidable when hiking dry trails. So, when conditions are like that, we?re going to take the NF Alert about a ?potential for exposure to asbestos fibers on your visit to national forests in California? very seriously. We will simply designate NOA zones on dry days as no hike zones given the large number of days we hike (or add a HEPA filter mask to our safety gear list?). We wonder how many people who visit these areas know about NOA. Prior to this, we did not. We thought about the countless, long backcountry trips on dusty trails that we and other outdoor enthusiasts take and grew concerned. Could it be that our frequent exposures to NOA are sufficiently low level to be considered safe? -problem is: we just don?t know. We hope by writing this, others can become aware of the issue. We?d like to hear from you if this concerns you too. Also, since we?re new to this, we?d welcome experts and others who have useful info to chime in and educate us further: please comment here or email us to add/correct info. In the meantime, let?s all pray for snow ? seems to be the safest way to enjoy these areas: when these natural risks are buried deep under snow. Live to ski another day!

How to increase home prices in the face of stagnant household ...

It is easy to get swept into the momentum of the housing market. The Federal Reserve has managed to push interest rates to historically low levels creating additional buying power for US households. As we enter the slower fall and winter selling season, there is unlikely to be any major changes until 2013 as the election year concludes. We do face major challenges ahead. This current momentum in housing isn?t being caused by flush state budgets or solid wage growth. No, this is being caused by low inventory, big investors crowding out households, and a concerted effort to push mortgage rates lower. If you simply follow the herd, you would think that prices are now near peak levels again (or soon will be) and household incomes are hitting record levels. Let us examine where things stand today deep in 2012.

California and nation

california and us home prices

It is clear that 2012 has pushed home prices higher overall. This has occurred both on a nationwide basis and also for California. Yet California home prices are far away from that peak reached in 2006. However, some mid-tier markets never really corrected and we are now seeing flippers selling homes for prices that are near peak levels. The argument is that overall things corrected but then this is applied to niche areas where prices are now back near peak levels (at least with the current prices being seen with some flips).

The low inventory and the narrative that the bottom is here is causing a flood of people to buy especially with low interest rates. In lower priced areas, a good portion of the market is being over bought by Wall Street and big money investors. This is still anything but a normal market.

US home prices

us home prices oct 2012

It is evident that US home prices have hit a new trend in 2012. Prices are moving up. Yet the driving force behind this is low interest rates, low inventory, and the high amount of investors buying up properties. Keep in mind that low interest rates and especially investment buying is finite. This money will dry up. In housing what you want to be seeing is sustainable appreciation in combination with rising household incomes and a healthy employment market. Those should be the driving forces instead of the Fed committing to another $500 billion of MBS purchases via QE3.

Median household income

median household income

This is the one argument that is always missing from the home boom 2.0 narrative. Is it possible to have sustained rising home prices when household incomes are falling or stagnant? It isn?t and the Fed and banks are fully aware of this. So the Federal Reserve has decided to push affordability via low rates as far as they can. It is a win-win for the financial industry. They can unload properties at much higher prices courtesy of the low interest rate. Some people think this comes at no expense. It does. Carrying a negative interest rate is pummeling those on fixed incomes and also, with one out of seven Americans on food stamps many are seeing those monthly deposits not going so far when they go shopping for food. Ultimately the cost is being shouldered by those who can least afford it. Ironically this flood of investors has also pushed rental prices higher as well creating a double-whammy.

LA Tiered home prices

la home tiered prices

Probably one of the better measures of price is the Case Shiller Index. This looks at repeat home sales so we are measuring apples to apples. The median price is also important but it is prone to changes with the mix of sales. Right now, the big drop in foreclosure resales is causing prices to surge. Yet it is important for trend shifts and also because the media and the public rely on this for their purchasing behavior.

As you can see from the chart above, each tier in Los Angeles County has shifted up a bit. We are far from peak prices and given the mania in certain areas, you would think this would be rising much faster. You are not missing anything. For those thinking they are missing something you might as well go to Las Vegas and try your hand at the tables. There is a mini mania in prime areas of California happening right now. As you see from the above charts, household incomes simply do not justify this movement. The momentum right now is in favor of higher prices but for fleeting reasons.

Home sales and trends

home sales

If things are so hot, why are home sales not running at a higher pace? The 12 month moving average is running a little bit higher than 35,000. This is the pace we?ve had since 2009 when the market was flying off a cliff. From 1998 to 2007 the moving average was above 45,000 sales per month. So what really is going on then with prices rising so fast overall?

The explanation comes from a few items:

-1. Inventory is low (we even hear complaints from real estate agents about this)

-2. Low rates increased leverage in the face of falling incomes (refer to earlier chart)

-3. From the bottom everything is higher (the increase is big from the bottom but put into context, still has us way below the 12 month moving average from over a decade ago)

-4. You are competing with big money investors

This is why sales are not exactly off the charts given all the favorable elements that are being perceived. For this market to continue on this path, nothing from the above can be removed. Keep in mind that with the ?fiscal cliff? some items on the table include the mortgage interest deduction cap. This will hit California hard especially in these mania locations. There is no reason for the nation to allow mortgage interest deduction above a certain level (i.e., $500,000 or capped at certain income levels).

?(LA Times) But since only about one-third of taxpayers itemize on their returns ? the rest opt for the standard deductions ? who's really getting these tax savings? As you might guess, people who have higher incomes are more likely to itemize and claim mortgage interest and other housing deductions. Citing the latest data on the subject, published by the IRS in 2009, Kolko found that only 15% of households with incomes below $50,000 took itemized deductions, while 65% of those with incomes between $50,000 and $200,000 did. Just about everybody with incomes above $200,000 ? 96% ? itemized on their returns.?

And guess who was number one on the list?

?California ranked No. 1 in the size of home mortgage deductions, with $18,876 on average. Next came Hawaii ($16,730), the District of Columbia ($16,720), Nevada ($15,502), Washington ($14,262), Maryland ($14,162) and Virginia ($14,094).?

There is little reason for the mortgage interest deduction to allow for such a large write-off especially when the typical US home price ranges from $150,000 to $170,000. We are in massive debt and for the nation to subsidize expensive California housing does not make sense.

Underwater

Mortgages underwater

Even with home prices moving up we still have over 9,000,000 underwater homeowners. This is a sizeable number. The above chart highlights underwater mortgages at various increases or decreases in home prices. The distressed inventory is still large but is decreasing.

The thing with the housing market is that it largely isn?t a market anymore. So with all of these market incentives and the fiscal situation looming next year, there has to be a catch. We have yet to see household incomes increase. The economy is still on shaky ground. Yet in many pocket markets you have people ignoring the macro economy and just running around their little enclaves with blinders on. Hot money is flowing in. There is no doubt about that. Yet it is not sustainable. Since election years usually produce very little change, we?ll have to wait until 2013 to see if this trend actually has some real teeth.

Do you think household incomes are important when it comes to home price?

Levels of Alcohol Intoxication - NH Legal Resource | Personal Injury ...

Every year, thousands and thousands of people in New Hampshire drink alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a car. However, the reality is that only a small percentage of those driving under the influence are actually caught?with a breathalyzer, or some other testing method, showing they have a blood alcohol content above the legal limit.

While it is common knowledge that the legal limit for driving in New Hampshire is .08%, most drivers are not aware what the level even indicates or the physical signs and symptoms of alcohol impairment.

Levels of Alcohol IntoxicationA blood alcohol test measures the amount of alcohol in your body, which is absorbed very quickly into the blood, and can show up within minutes of having a drink. The level of alcohol in the blood reaches its highest point approximately half an hour after consuming a drink. This test measures the alcohol content of your blood, usually expressed as a percentage of alcohol in the blood. For example, a blood alcohol content reading of .08 means that .08% of the person?s blood is alcohol.

BAC .01 ? .02

Impairment often begins with the first drink. At a level between .01 and .02, you will become more relaxed, your ability to divide attention between two or more sources of visual information can be affected, and your capacity to correctly judge speed and distance can be impaired. Clearly, even after consuming a small amount of alcohol, your ability to operate a car effectively begins to be compromised.

BAC .03 ? .06

Once the blood alcohol content reaches .03 to .06, the effects of the alcohol begin to more pronounced. You may experience even more relaxation, mild euphoria, decreased inhibition and increased talkativeness. Your ability to concentrate will start to be affected, and your visual perception will be affected. Reaction times will slow and you will start to have difficulty responding to stimuli. At this point, your ability to operate a car has reached a point where it is questionable. While the law says you may drive with a blood alcohol content at this level, it is clear you are not operating at full capacity.

BAC .06 ? .09

With a blood alcohol level between .06 and .09, you will start to experience significant disinhibition, along with increased extroversion and blunted feelings. Your speech, balance and hearing will be slightly impaired. Judgment and self-control become reduced. You will likely believe that you are functioning at a higher level than you actually are. At this point, you are most likely visibly intoxicated, whether you realize it or not. You are also most likely above the legal limit to operate a car, and certainly should not do soon risk a New Hampshire DWI.

BAC .10 ? .19

At .10 to .19, you will start to over-express yourself, experience emotional swings and have a decreased libido. You will have difficulty controlling impulsive reactions, will become more daring and lose fine motor skills. Your reflexes and reaction time are even more impaired. In addition, you may start slurring your speech and staggering. With the effects of alcohol at this point, driving would be extremely dangerous?it is always considering drunk driving in NH.

BAC .20 ? .29

Once you reach .20 to .29, you will experience a loss of understanding, begin to lose sensations and are at risk of losing consciousness. In fact, you may simply suddenly pass out. Your motor skills will be severely impaired. It is at this level that people have ?blackouts.? Between the severe loss of motor skills and the likelihood of passing out, operating a care becomes even more dangerous than before?sometimes physically impossible.

Once your alcohol content goes above .30, severe and permanent side-effects may occur. At .30, you will have severe central nervous system depression, along with losing bladder function. You will experience heart rate problems and difficulty with breathing. At .40, you will almost certainly lose consciousness and will be at risk to stop breathing. Finally, once you go above .50 you risk alcohol poisoning and even death.

It is common sense to act reasonably with alcohol to avoid a NH DWI. It is also important to be aware of basic health consequences following excessive drinking. There is nothing wrong with enjoying yourself, but ensure you do so safely at all times.

The Influence of music on child's development

?Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them ? a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.? ? Gerald Ford, former President, United States of America.

We all know how mothers rock and swing their babies and put them to sleep with those sweet humming of lullabies. What the mothers know instinctively, now the scientists have proven with different studies and research that music is the best vehicle for learning in the early years of life.? Young children respond effectively to musical sounds and rhythmic movements. Dr Charles Eliot from Harvard University said that Music rightly is the best mind trainer. The power of music goes beyond the words can explain. Music builds the powerful bond between the parent and child which is created through the musical moments shared together through rhythm, movement, sensations and feelings. Children are connected to their roots, culture and tradition with this unique and powerful medium of music.

Early childhood development and education experts, psychologists and neuroscientists have stated that music not only offers joyful learning experience, but it also helps their brain cells to make the connections required for every kind of intelligence. It nurtures a child?s imagination and creativity.

Music influences all areas of development - social, emotional, intellectual, motor, language and overall learning processes.

In fact, music helps to work mind and body together. Recent research also has discovered that music plays a significant role in cognitive development of young children. Music builds self esteem and it also inspires self-expression, imagination, creativity and memorizing skills. Children in their early years use music to present ideas and build concepts. By singing, dancing and interacting together, social and emotional skills of young children are also improved. By this activity, children come to feel a part of the community. The more children are involved in a group, the more they learn from each other.

The rhythmic pattern of music fosters children?s ability to keep time and count the sequences, thus enabling their mathematical skills. Children move their bodies to music, dance, clap, stomp, learn to control their muscles, vocal chords and breathing, which leads to physical development. It improves their gross and fine motor skills.

The skills necessary for learning to read and write are developed through music. When we speak about early literacy, children gain comprehension skills, phonological processing and spoken language, which are the foundation of reading. The children with special needs are benefitted through various musical experiences as it is pleasurable to them and they feel more comfortable in a group. And above all, they acquire a life long love for music.

Keeping all these benefits in mind, the curriculum of the preschool should be designed in such a way that the child gets the exposure to age appropriate music practices so that he/she acquires these important skills which are learnt through group activities like rhymes, poems and conceptual songs.

Inspiring Learning - Home School Coach

by Mary Ann on November 2, 2012

A while back I received an email from a past student. Her sister had sent it to her because it reminded her of ?how creates inspiring learning. My student sent it on to me because she said ?You are where I learned it?.

I noticed that some of the responses that she received when this was sent out were ?from some actual home schooling mom?s. They basically went like this ? ?You?aren?t?making fun of us are you??

My student has become an expert on inspiring learning in her home. This is definitely something she?isn?t?making fun of. ?The above quote, although a bit overdone, is a beautiful indication of how learning should be. It is a natural off shoot of living and it has context in the lives we live. This keeps learning interesting and relevant. It also helps with remembering. This is how small children learn in real life. They observe what is around them and how what they are observing fits in with the life they are living.

Listen, it is tough to come up with something new to teach every day of the week, 52 weeks a year if you are a homeschooling family. In fact, it?isn?t?just the home schooling family that wants their children to be inspired and to love learning. Its what all good parents want. And it doesn?t have to be hard or take a lot of time.

If you can learn to take regular occurrences in life and turn them into wonderful learning adventures your children will learn to do it for themselves as they mature. Also, if you can learn to take a life occurrence and extend it into many different learning adventures you will excite and inspire your families learning and make your job much easier. No more racking your brain every day for something interesting for your family to learn.

Here is what the above scenario might look like with a 4 year old:

  • Tell child that there haven?t always been light bulbs while you are changing the bulb.
  • Show him a candle ?or a lantern and tell him this is what people used to use.
  • Suggest that, that night you don?t use any?electricity?and use candles instead. Pop corn. Play a game.
  • Read a child?s book about day or night or Thomas Edison or electricity, whatever you can find at the library.
  • See where to go next based on the child?s questions and participation.
  • Have fun.

Here is what it might look like with a 10 year old:

  • Ask them to get the bulb and help you change it.
  • While changing the bulb ask if they know who invented the light bulb.
  • If yes, go to the library and get a book to read about day, night, Thomas Edison, etc.
  • If no, show them a picture of ?Thomas Edison on the internet, read a bit about him and then go to the library. See above.
  • Have a night without using any light bulbs. A repeat of what you did for the 4 year old. See above.
  • Lster watch a cool video on how light bulbs are made.
  • As a family, make a time line about ?Thomas Edison to post on the living room wall.
  • Make a battery powered light bulb.
  • I could go on and on!
  • Have fun as a family!

Here are some real life examples of families that really understand how to do this and do it well.

Okay, you got me. I cant spell for my life >.>

As for Neville, I don't remember him being mentioned as such, but il check.........I know I got everything else right. James is a Second Year (Note, no one can play James. SPecial Plot reasons forbid it)

Anyways, can't wait to see all your characters!

I think it only works with Wizards and Witches, but last time I checked, you could be half giant as well (Hagrid proves this, go Hagrid!)

HOwever, plotwise, story wise, and generally, for the sake of ability to RP, you should be a Witch or Wizard

NOTE: I, personally, don't see the appeal in Harry Potter whatsoever, so I won't be joining.

On to my reason being here......

Kira's thoughts before his first kill.

Righteously, he became a god among all.

But in the end, even gods fall.~

Right, well, Victoria Grey and Rose Weasley have been accepted. TO be clear, il be posting first, sometime later today. Il just let everyone else to get in last minuet characters.

Which will have an.....interesting twist.....

On a side note, im already picturing the Albus/Rose Team XD

But, what would be amazing if we got an OC in Hugglepuff xD
