Te'o doing tough balancing act at NFL combine

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Manti Te'o walked into a crowded room of reporters Saturday, took a breath and settled in for 15 minutes of NFL scouting combine history.

Again, the former Notre Dame linebacker explained how he had been duped into an Internet romance he had with a girlfriend he never met. He did his best to turn the page on an embarrassing chapter by talking football. This time, he even got to see it play out on live television 12 yards away ? where three muted flat-screen monitors were in direct view of Te'o.

He answered every question with thoughtful deliberation and tried to provide clarity on a hoax that turned one of the nation's most inspirational college football players into the butt of national jokes.

"I cared for somebody. That's what I was taught to do ever since I was young. Somebody needs help, you help them out," Te'o said.

Later he added: "People doubted me because I took a while to come out. From our point of view, we wanted to let everything come out first, and then let my side come out. The way we did it, I thought, worked best for me."

Te'o's news conference was the most anticipated event of the NFL's second-biggest offseason weekend, which brought the makeshift media room inside Lucas Oil Stadium to a virtual standstill ? twice.

The too-good-to-be-true story began with Te'o's incredible performances after learning his grandmother and what he believed was his girlfriend had died within hours of one another in September. Te'o said it inspired him to play his best football all season, and it was so compelling that it helped turn Te'o into a Heisman Trophy contender as he was leading the Fighting Irish to an undefeated regular season and into the national championship game.

On Dec. 26, Te'o notified Notre Dame officials that he had received a call from his supposedly dead girlfriend's phone three weeks earlier.

The school investigated and on Jan. 16 ? after Deadspin.com broke the story of the fake girlfriend ? athletic director Jack Swarbrick announced at a news conference that Te'o had been duped. Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, 22, later said he created the online persona of Lennay Kekua, a nonexistent woman who Te'o said he fell in love with despite never meeting her in person.

Since then, Te'o had only done a few one-on-one interviews.

On Saturday all that changed as many of the 800 credentialed media members surrounded the podium in rows that went eight deep. Te'o wore a tie-died red-and-black workout shirt.

"It's pretty crazy," said Te'o, who has played most of his games on national television and was one of the most recognizable college players last season. "I've been in front of a few cameras before, but never as many as this."

Only two scenes from the combine over the past 15 years could even compare to what Te'o had to contend with Saturday.

The first came in 2004 when former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett was allowed to participate in the combine after a court ruled he should be allowed to enter the draft after finishing high school only two years earlier. That decision was later reversed.

The other time was 2010, when Heisman Trophy winner and two-time national champion Tim Tebow stepped to the podium in Indianapolis and everyone, including those listening to Packers coach Mike McCarthy, sprinted to the opposite end of the room for Tebow.

This was different.

When word leaked Te'o would speak at about noon, reporters immediately surrounded the podium. Over the next 25 minutes, rumors circulated that in a rare and possibly unprecedented move, Te'o's agent would speak from the podium. That did not happen. There also was speculation that Te'o might deliver an opening statement like the then-injured Michael Crabtree did in 2009 and Cam Newton did two years later. That did not happen, either, though Te'o did make a closing statement in which he thanked his family, friends and fans for standing by him during this tumultuous month.

"It's definitely embarrassing. You walk into grocery stores and people give you double takes to see if they're staring at you," he said before explaining he's moved on. "If I was embarrassed, I wouldn't be able to stand in front of you."

The only thing that really matters in Indy, though, is what team officials think. Te'o said in the two formal interviews he's had, with Green Bay and Houston, they have asked about the hoax. He has another 18 interviews left.

Will it hurt his draft position?

Former NFL executive Bill Polian, architect of four Super Bowl teams in Buffalo and two in Indianapolis, has been adamant that it won't, and coaches and general managers seem to agree.

Most say they are more concerned with the red flags of other players -- drug use, alcohol abuse, academic woes and even criminal allegations -- than they are with Te'o's tale.

"Somebody that's not truthful, that's big, to me. I'm a big fan of the 'Judge Judy' show. And when you lie in Judge Judy's courtroom, it's over. Your credibility is completely lost. You have no chance of winning that case," San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday. "I learned that from her. It's very powerful, and true. Because if somebody does lie to you, how can you ever trust anything they ever say after that?"

Two questions later, he was asked whether that meant the reigning NFC champs would avoid Te'o in April's draft.

"No. I wouldn't say that," Harbaugh said.

Te'o and the general public weren't the only ones watching the interview session Saturday.

Team officials are taking notes, too.

"Honestly, it's a distraction. If he can handle that distraction and still be able to perform on the football field, I really don't think it makes that much of a difference," Carolina coach Ron Rivera said before Te'o spoke. "We'll talk about it, we'll find out about it. The bottom line is, is he a good person and can he play football?"

On the field, Te'o's is one of the top linebackers available.

Last season, he won the Maxwell Award, Bednarik Award, Butkus Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Lombardi Award and Walter Camp national player of the year and finished second in balloting for the Trophy.

But there are concerns. Te'o was asked if the undercurrent of the hoax explained his poor play in Notre Dame's BCS championship game loss to Alabama. He has said it didn't.

"They want to be able to trust their players. You don't want to invest in somebody you can't trust," Te'o said. "With everybody here, they're just trying to get to know you as a person and as a football player, and I understand where they're coming from."

But the hardest part has been seeing the impact it's had on those around him.

In a phone call, Te'o said his sister explained how the family had to sneak into its own house because of the people parked in the front yard, and he also said he empathized with the chaos it has caused Tuiasosopo's family. He said he has no plans to sue, either.

Instead, Te'o just wants to forget about the hoax and focus on football.

"I've learned first, just to be honest in everything you do, from the big things to the small things. To keep your circle very small and to really understand who's in your corner and who's not," he said. "Going off of the season my team and I had, there were a lot of people in our corner, and then when Jan. 16th happened, there was a lot of people in the other corner. I've just learned to appreciate the people that I have that are with me."

Untold Number of U.S. Troops to Remain in Afghanistan Beyond 2014

23 Feb 2013, 12:00 PM PDT post a comment

The force of 32,000 gives Afghan officials time to hold their presidential elections. "Once those elections are completed," Panetta said "we will then begin the final drawdown."

Panetta spoke highly of the Afghan military and police forces: "There is a strong consensus that our mission is succeeding... on the ground because of the growing role and capabilities all of us have seen in the Afghan national security forces."

The Obama admin is currently talking with U.S. allies in Europe to decide how many troops will stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014. Pentagon press secretary George Little said a force of "8,000 to 12,000 has been discussed," but no decision has been made.?

LSE cancels Arab Spring forum in UAE, citing local curbs

DUBAI (Reuters) - A top British university has cancelled a conference on the Arab Spring in the United Arab Emirates, citing curbs imposed by the Gulf state, which has placed limits on foreign research groups in the past two years.

The UAE, a major oil exporter and regional business hub, has not seen the unrest that has ousted autocratic Arab rulers elsewhere, but analysts and diplomats say the U.S. ally is anxious to prevent instability spreading to its turf.

In a statement emailed to Reuters, the London School of Economics (LSE) said it cancelled its gathering scheduled for February 24 "in response to restrictions imposed on the intellectual content of the event that threatened academic freedom."

The UAE also barred entry to a visiting university lecturer, Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, on his arrival to participate in the event, called 'The Middle East: Transition in the Arab World', Ulrichsen said.

He told Reuters he had been scheduled to speak at the forum, which the LSE was due to co-host with the American University of Sharjah (AUS), on the topic of the international implications of protests in the UAE's Gulf ally, Bahrain.

Ulrichsen, who has written critically about the Bahraini government's response to mass protests that erupted in early 2011, told Reuters UAE authorities had instructed conference organisers to cut any discussion of Bahrain from the programme.

"They made it very clear," he said.

The LSE said without elaborating it was aware of Ulrichsen's situation.

No UAE official was available for comment.

A statement by the AUS, one of the Gulf Arab state's leading universities, confirmed the conference had been cancelled.

It added: "The decision made by LSE cited restrictions on the intellectual content of the event that threatened academic freedom as the reason for the cancellation. AUS is unaware of any other information relating to the last minute cancellation."

Over the past year the UAE has shown little tolerance of home-grown dissent, detaining dozens of Islamists who the authorities say are members of the Muslim Brotherhood plotting to overthrow the government.

In March 2012 the UAE closed down the offices of two Western pro-democracy groups, the U.S.-funded National Democratic Institute and Germany's Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, citing licensing irregularities.

The Abu Dhabi Gallup Center, a branch of the U.S. polling and research firm, also closed down in 2012.

In 2011 the country refused to renew the permit of the Gulf Research Centre thinktank due to "objections by the Dubai government to various aspects of (its) work".

R&R Golf Cars closes shop, employees and customers seek answers

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -

Chris Sharp, of Indio, got the news on Wednesday that he along with more than 20 employees at the 3-year-old business R&R Golf Cars in Rancho Mirage were being laid off.

"The owner came up and said we're closing the doors. We went bankrupt. We're done," said Sharp.

Sharp tells us the business closed shop only a week after he was promoted from delivery to parts manager.

"There's a lot of pissed off customers and a lot of angry employees. They have no communication. Everyone's confused on about what's going on out here," said Sharp.

Many of them showed up on Thursday in search of answers from the owner Rory Royston, 23. They also involved the sheriff's department while they could only watch as inventory was loaded up and towed away to be locked down in storage.

"They had trucks lined up. You couldn't even drive in here last night. You couldn't drive in here this morning. They were loading up the golf carts," said Christian Reyes, an employee at neighboring business Patios Plus.

A sign posted on the door reads that the business is closing and "current customers will recieve a call next week."

"They were angry. They wanted to know where their stuff was. They have people's golf carts that they paid for. And they rightfully should get some answers and they don't have that," said Reyes.

We called Royston. He says he laid off nearly two dozen employees at his Rancho Mirage show room and Palm Desert service department, admitting that his business went under and he's filing for bankruptcy.

It was a shock to some, however others felt it coming.

"I've been calling it that they were going out of business just because you couldn't order parts for weeks," said Geoffrey Benedetto, a former employee.

"He tried to grow too fast. He's a young owner, he's really young. He's 23 years old and he owns a multi-million dollar company. I just think he wanted to grow faster than he was able to do and kind of lost track of things," said Sharp.

Royston tells us he's working to "restructure so everyone gets paid."

Meanwhile, customers and vendors say they want their carts and their money.

"I hope that Rory does the right things and all the customers out here are happy and get taken care of and they don't have to deal with losing 10s of thousands of dollars," said Sharp.

Employee Jarvin Aivaz says he will personally help Royston deliver the carts without pay to their rightful owners on Friday.

Royston tells us he did the best he could as a young business owner, but unfortunately failed and hopes to bounce back.

Virginia Landmarks: Old Stone Church in Centreville, Va.

Fairfax
-
There is an Old Stone Church in Centreville, Va. located off of one of the main roads that stretches across Fairfax County. Still an active parish today, the church is a historical landmark.
Northern Virginia is deeply rooted in Early American history. As settlers arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries to the region, the area known today as "Fairfax County" links back to those early land establishments during the Colonial and Revolutionary War years.

Fairfax County is named for Thomas, sixth Lord Fairfax, Baron of Cameron who first arrived on North American soil in 1735 when he inherited a large parcel of land.

Fast forward to the 19th century and Fairfax County, along with surrounding counties, will again be noted in history books due to the prominent American Civil War battles and other events that took place in the area.

There are many historical landmarks from those earlier days that remain, some are well-known and others, less so. This writer routinely tries to seek out not only the well-known and highly toured locations in the region, but also some of the perhaps lesser known landmarks.

The "Old Stone Church" was originally built in the early half of the 19th Century. It was dismantled during the American Civil War and rebuilt shortly after the war. Today the church remains as both an active parish and a historical landmark.

One such landmark is the "Old Stone Church". I had heard there was a historical church in Centreville, which is located on the western end of Fairfax County, and decided to take a ride over to see where it was. What I found was a stone church with a historical marker out front that indicated the structure had been used as a hospital by the Union Army, twice.

The first time was during the first battle of Manassas in 1861 when Assistant Surgeon David L. Magruder commanded the building for medical treatments. According to the sign posted outside the church, Magruder would later write he ?took possession of a stone church, pleasantly situated in a grove of timber, directly ? to the right of the road we had passed on advancing to the attack.? The church was used again a year later during the Second Battle of Manassas. It also served as a Confederate hospital, according to the posted sign, who took control of the Old Stone Church depended on where it fell as battle lines changed.

Probe launched into Twitter photos of 'James Bulger killer Jon Venables'

Photographs on Twitter allegedly showing an adult Jon Venables are being investigated by the Attorney General, his office revealed today.

The news came just two days after the 20th anniversary of the death of two-year-old James Bulger, a murder that caused widespread revulsion and anger. Venables was 10 when he and classmate Robert Thompson abducted and murdered the toddler, leading to them being jailed for life.

In 2001, when they were released on licence, High Court judge Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss made an unprecedented order banning publication of any information which could lead to the revelation of their new identities.

But today it was reported that images had appeared on the social network site Twitter, claiming to show an adult Venables posing with friends. While these have now been removed, there are fears that more have been posted on the internet.

"The AGO has been alerted to a possible contempt of court. We are liaising with the MoJ (Ministry of Justice) and others to establish the facts,? a spokesman for the Attorney General's office said. "We can neither confirm nor deny whether the pictures in question are of Jon Venables. It should be noted, there is a worldwide injunction in place which prevents the publication of any images or information purporting to identify anyone as Jon Venables."

The announcement comes at a time when the authorities are increasing clamping down on people who breach media laws on the internet.

"As highlighted by (Director of Public Prosecutions) Kier Starmer's recent guidelines on social media, people are subject to the same laws of contempt as the mainstream media and publishing a photo of?Venables, in breach of the court order, is clearly contempt of court,? said Niri Shan, head of media law at law firm Taylor Wessing.

He continued: "Whether the Attorney General decides to prosecute will most likely depend on number of followers the person who tweeted the photos has. This would be a good case for him to send a strong message to those that use Twitter that they breach court orders at their own peril."

The brutality of the case, in which two young schoolboys abducted, tortured and murdered the toddler, leaving his body on a rail line, sparked shock and angry protests in 1993.

Venables, 30, had his parole revoked in 2010 and was jailed for two years after admitting downloading and distributing indecent images of children but is expected to make a fresh application for release in the coming months.

(AP) ? If there were any questions about Florida's status in the Southeastern Conference following a loss at Arkansas last week, the Gators put those to rest Tuesday night.

With another lopsided win in league play.

And against defending national champion Kentucky, which had freshman star Nerlens Noel go down with a knee injury.

Scottie Wilbekin had 14 points and eight assists, Pat Young recorded his sixth double-double of the season and No. 7 Florida handled the 25th-ranked Wildcats 69-52.

The Gators (20-3, 10-1 SEC) snapped a five-game losing streak in the series and improved to 12-0 at home.

This one solidified Florida's spot atop the SEC.

"They're an outstanding basketball team," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "They were last year, they are this year. They're well coached, they're talented, they're very physical. Their guards are just jerking balls out of our guys' hands. We couldn't get near the basket on Young. He just physically took away the rim. And they're very active."

The Wildcats (17-7, 8-3) lost for the first time in six games, and it may have been costly.

Noel, the nation's leading shot-blocker, injured his left knee in the second half and was taken to a campus hospital for tests.

Noel, a forward who averages 10.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.5 blocks a game, landed awkwardly on his leg with about 8 minutes to play. He screamed in pain as trainers rushed to his side. Teammates carried him to the locker room. After the game, trainers pushed him through the halls of the O'Connell Center in a wheelchair and with his left leg in a brace.

"I'm physically sick right now for him," Calipari said. "What I'm hoping is it's not the extreme. I'm hoping it's some sort of twist, but we don't know."

Florida had a comfortable lead before the injury.

The Gators opened a double-digit lead, 31-19, in the first half on consecutive 3-pointers by Wilbekin, Mike Rosario and Kenny Boynton ? backbreaking shots that frustrated Calipari and had his players looking dazed and confused.

Florida extended it to 16 points on Rosario's layup. It was the biggest deficit the Wildcats had faced all season.

And they did little to erase it.

Young and fellow big man Erik Murphy, who was in early foul trouble, carried the load in the second half.

Young made a basket with a nifty, up-and-under move, had a reverse layup and added a sweet, left-handed hook. He finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

"When he gives incredible effort and plays with a really good motor, he's capable of getting double-doubles every night," said Florida coach Billy Donovan, who improved to 2-7 against Calipari. "He rebounded. He made great effort plays, kept balls alive. He did a really good job."

Murphy drained a 3-pointer after taking a charge on the other end. He also had three blocks.

The Gators needed big games from Young and Murphy considering they played a second game without forward Will Yeguete and were undersized against the Wildcats.

Nonetheless, the difference was guard play.

Wilbekin sliced through the lane at will, creating open shots for teammates and getting Kentucky's players out of position. Noel, Archie Goodwin and Willie Cauley-Stein spent time on the bench in foul trouble.

"I really thought he played an all-around, very, very good game," Donovan said of Wilbekin, who was benched to start Saturday's win against Mississippi State.

Fellow guard Rosario finished with 12 points for Florida, which has won every conference game by double digits. Murphy chipped in 10 points, and Casey Prather added 12 points and two blocks and took several charges, proving again to be a capable replacement for Yeguete.

Cauley-Stein and Julius Mays led Kentucky with 10 points apiece.

The Wildcats shot 42 percent from the field and had 17 turnovers.

"We just played soft, scared, uptight," Mays said. "We let the pressure get to us. Usually, we're really good with the press. I don't know what it was today, but we just weren't tough enough."

Calipari warned reporters Monday that beating Florida would be a difficult task, especially since the Gators have played so well at home and have a much more experienced roster.

The most significant disparities came in the paint and off turnovers. The Gators scored 36 points in the paint and 20 points off turnovers; the Wildcats had 26 points down low and just five off Florida's 11 turnovers.

Afterward, though, all the talk was about Noel's injury.

"I don't know what ended up happening, but it was clear from him moaning in pain that he was struggling," Donovan said. "I admire the way he plays and I admire his energy. I don't know how badly he's hurt, but the energy came from a hustle play. It kind of embodies who he is as a player. He's a hustle-play guy, and you just feel sad if there's any kind of length or duration that he's out because everybody admires in this league, coaches-wise, how he plays the game."

India bought helicopters Obama rejected as ?costly?

NEW DELHI: US president Barack Obama had found a variant of the AW-101 helicopters too exorbitant to pass muster in 2009. But the Indian government had no such qualms while inking the Rs 3,546-crore deal for 12 plush AW-101 helicopters just a year later in 2010.

The American "Marine One", the call sign of the US Marine Corps helicopter which ferries the US President, would of course have been much more high-tech and "souped-up" helicopter compared to the Indian variant.

Obama had shot down the Marine One project, under which the US Navy was to have acquired 28 helicopters, after cost escalations had taken the overall cost to over $13 billion in June 2009, as per some estimates.

Money, instead, was invested to upgrade the existing US Presidential helicopter fleet. Last heard, another AW-101 variant was again in contention to bag the US Navy's latest programme to develop the "Marine One Presidential Helicopter".

Three of the 12 AW-101 choppers contracted by India ? eight in VVIP configuration and four in non-VVIP - have already been inducted in the IAF's elite Communication Squadron, which ferries around the President, PM and other VVIPs, at the Palam airbase. They are slated to replace the ageing Russian-origin Mi-8s and Mi-17s being currently used to fly VVIPs within the country.

Indian VVIPs have been getting plush new aircraft and helicopters to travel in style and security over the last decade. The AW-101s, for instance, have robust self-defence systems like missile-approach warners, chaff and flare dispensers and directed infra-red electronic counter-measures to protect VVIPs on board. In the VVIP configuration, they ferry only 10 passengers instead of the usual 40.

Another concern of the Special Protection Group (SPG), which provides proximate security to the PM, was the helicopters have "a high tail boom" to allow cars to come right next to the rear exit staircase without "exposing" VVIPs to a threat from anyone in the vicinity.

Earlier, India had inducted five mid-sized Embraer 135BJ Legacy jets, under a Rs 727-crore deal in September 2003, and three Business Boeing Jets (BBJs), under a Rs 937-crore contract in October 2005, for the travel of VVIPs. The BBJs also have advanced self-protection suites to guard against missiles and other threats. While the Legacy jets replaced old HS-748 Avros with the Communication Squadron, the BBJs substituted the two 737-200 aircraft bought in 1983.

Major defence scams

Jeep Scandal: One of the first scandals to hit independent India, and definitely the country's first brush with allegations of impropriety in defence procurement. In 1948, Indian high commissioner in Britain V K Krishna Menon was accused of bypassing procurement protocols to sign a deal worth Rs 80 lakh to buy 155 jeeps from the UK. Many also alleged they were second-hand jeeps. Government did not permit a judicial inquiry. Menon went on to become India's defence minister.

Bofors Scandal: The most infamous of all defence scandals the country has seen. Allegations emerged in the late 1980s that there were kickbacks in the purchase of Bofors guns from Sweden. Several high profile individuals figured among the accused, the investigations went on for many years and finally ended in a whimper. It brought down the fortunes of the young Rajiv
HDW Scandal: Allegations emerged in 1987 that the German defence firm had paid a commission for the purchase of submarines by India, in the early 80s. Former Navy chief and one of the architects of the 1971 war, Admiral S M Nanda, was among those raided. The CBI closed its investigations, failing to find any evidence of the alleged payment of bribes.

Tehelka Tapes: Two reporters who went around as representatives of a fake defence firm recorded many key political leaders, military officers and civil servants talking in detail about how bribes were paid in defence deals. Defence minister George Fernandes had to resign after his party's treasurer boasted in the tapes about collecting bribes along with Jaya Jaitly from arms dealers. Specific evidence emerged of paybacks in purchase of Barak missiles from Israel, upgunning of artillery guns etc. No major breakthrough in CBI investigations until today. It has closed at least one of the cases without any evidence.

Denel Scandal: Allegations emerged in South Africa that Denel, a government-controlled firm which had supplied anti-material rifle to Indian Army, had paid bribes to middlemen for the Indian contract. Chargesheet yet to be filed.

Sudipto Ghosh Scandal: In 2009, the CBI arrested the just-retired chief of Ordnance Factory Board Sudipto Ghosh and several of his associates for fixing contracts of OFB. After CBI found evidence of bribery, the government in March 2012 blacklisted six companies for 10 years -- Singapore Technologies, Israeli Military Industries, Germany's Rheinmetall Air Defence, Russian firm Corporation Defence, Indian firms T S Kisan & Company and R K Machine Tool.

Abhishek Verma Scandal: The son of former members of Parliament is in jail, and he and his wife are accused of stealing defence secrets and accepting bribes from defence firms. Investigations are continuing into the affairs of Verma, who may have also had a role in the VVIP helicopter deal.

Trucking company to pay $50,000 in major EEOC case

(AP) ? One of the nation's largest trucking companies has settled a closely watched sexual harassment lawsuit for $50,000, but it could try to recoup millions of dollars in legal fees.

CRST Van Expedited agreed in a Friday settlement with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to pay the lone female driver remaining in what had been a class-action case the EEOC filed in 2007.

The agency once sought relief for up to 270 women who were allegedly harassed by male instructors or drivers for the Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based company. But a federal appeals court ruled that the EEOC erred by filing the lawsuit before it identified every affected worker, investigated their claims and sought informal settlements.

That ruling made it harder for the agency to bring class-action lawsuits in several states.

Ants are just about everywhere you look, and yet it's largely unknown how they manage to be so ubiquitous. Scientists have understood the carnal mechanism of ant reproduction, but until now have known little of how successful the daughters of a colony are when they attempt to found new colonies.

For the first time, Stanford biologists have been able to identify specific parent ants and their own children in wild ant colonies, making it possible to study reproduction trends.

And in a remarkable display of longevity, an original queen ant was found to be producing new ants several decades after mating, sending out daughter queens throughout her 20- to 30-year lifespan.

"Most animals produce offspring for a while, and then they enter a life stage where they don't," said Deborah Gordon, a biology professor at Stanford and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. "These queen ants are mating once, storing that sperm in a special sac, keeping it alive and using it to fertilize eggs for another 25 years."

From an ecological viewpoint, an ant colony is much like a tree putting out seeds, with the potential to create new trees. An ant queen produces genetically identical worker ants that live in the same colony, and also produces sons, and daughter queens. The daughter queens, after mating, establish new colonies of their own.

Gordon has been studying a particular population of harvester ant colonies in southeastern Arizona for 28 years, meticulously recording when a new colony rises or an older one falls.

Gordon's group took the DNA fingerprint of each colony by analyzing a section of microsatellite, or "junk", DNA to identify which colonies were related. By pairing the genetic analysis with the long-term observations, Gordon was able to determine the original queen and colony, and the order in which the daughter queens and subsequent generations established new colonies.

The researchers also found that only about 25 percent of the colonies reproduce at all, and many of the daughter queens are not successful. The entire population the study group consisted of about 300 colonies relies on just a few queens to make most of the offspring year after year.

"We don't know whether all harvester ant populations always behave this way, or whether these trends hold true for all 11,000 ant species, because nobody has identified colony offspring before," Gordon said. "This gives us new insight on how ant populations change over time."

In general, ants play an important role in agriculture around the world, with some helping to disperse seeds while others eat herbivorous insects. Understanding how populations of ant colonies reproduce and expand, and the rate at which they do so, could be useful in managing invasive ant species, predicting crop yields and understanding the ecology of tropical forests.

"If you're trying to understand how a population grows say, you are trying to keep a population of lions going the first thing you need to know is how many lionesses you have, and how many cubs they have and can support per year," Gordon said. "For ecological purposes, it's very useful to be able to say how ant populations will grow. This is the first step toward understanding how to predict numbers of ant colonies."

Homeland Security Delays Plan to Place Sensors on U.S.-Mexico Border

The U.S. government?s plan to spend millions on advanced new ground sensors at the Mexican border has been delayed, Danger Room has learned, as the sensors have bandwidth and frequency problems the feds haven?t resolved. The delay isn?t the first ? and it comes as thousands of aging sensors dotting the border trigger false alarms that have proved deadly to Border Patrol agents.

The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) originally planned to blanket the border with a new generation of ?unattended ground sensors,? or UGS?s. It was supposed to be a big help for Border Patrol agents, intended to ?track, identify, and classify illegal incursions? across the border, according to a solicitation sent to businesses by CBP in April 2011. But last week, an update to the solicitation made it seem like it was canceled, stating abruptly that there are no plans to ?release a solicitation for this specific requirement in the near future.?

According to CBP, it hasn?t been canceled outright ? but it has been delayed for much, if not most, of 2013. The problem: The sensors can?t talk to the rest of the tech along the border. ?We?ve determined that we need to resolve issues with saturated radio frequencies, limited bandwidth and system integration with the existing CBP infrastructure,??Jenny Burke, a public affairs officer with CBP, tells Danger Room. The agency will try again to replace its aging sensors ?within the next six to nine months.?

The delay is only the latest set of woes for the border security program. In recent months, it?s has been reportedly beset by delays and changing requirements, and the agency as a whole has been reportedly short-staffed and plagued by budget cuts.

The sensors are also supposed to be tough. They have to able to survive in extreme weather, and be finely tuned enough to distinguish between individuals and groups of people, as well as telling people apart from animals. Finally, CBP wants the sensors to spot vehicles, and tell different vehicles apart from each other, like in spotting whether a vehicle is a truck or actually a motorcycle.?Unlike most conventional ground sensors, which rely largely on acoustic and seismic measurements, the sensors would ?incorporate a variety of external detectors and/or probes, such as, but not limited to seismic, magnetic, acoustic, IR imager, [and] radar,? the solicitation noted at the time.

Most of the 12,800 sensors currently used along the border aren?t as advanced. According to the Los Angeles Times, their batteries have been corroded from rainfall, and ants have chewed the wires. The short-range sensors have difficulty distinguishing human activity from animals or environmental sounds like falling rocks and wind. Worst of all, they have a very high rate of false alarms. A 2005 report from the DHS Inspector General found only four percent of signals?(.pdf) were caused by people illegally crossing the border. Thirty-four percent of signals were false alarms, and 62 percent of signals were utterly unknown as to their origins.

These false alarms are a big risk to the women and men who patrol the border. In October, one Border Patrol agent was killed and another wounded when two groups of agents stumbled into each other in the darkness and opened fire while investigating a tripped sensor. The sensor was later found to have broadcast a false alarm.

Swapping out the sensors for newer versions were also intended to be a key part of the Arizona Border Surveillance Technology Plan, a $1.1 billion program to build a network of radars and sensors along the Arizona border over 10 years. In a foreboding sign, the Arizona plan emerged after its much larger predecessor was junked by DHS in 2010. The predecessor, called SBInet, had cost more than $1 billion before it was put down due to cost overruns and faulty technology, and had only managed to cover about 72 miles of the southwest border?s 2,000-mile frontier.

But it doesn?t mean and end to sensors more broadly. The U.S. military has also taken to deploying some of the latest ground sensors ? which could conceivably operate for decades using solar-powered batteries ? to detect insurgent footprints in Afghanistan. Currently, there are tens of thousands of UGVs in use in Afghanistan. To push the technology further, the Pentagon has spent millions on researching even more advanced sensors that can be networked together in giant mesh networks. But in the meantime, it doesn?t look like that technology will be coming to the border anytime soon. That means Border Patrol agents need to be extra cautious.

Teenage love-biter forced on sex crime register - The Local

A 14-year-old boy who gave his classmate a love bite has been ordered by a court to submit a DNA sample to be stored on a biometric register of sex offenders. Germany's highest court will now investigate the case.

The unnamed boy landed before a court in 2011, aged 14, when parents of a 13-year-old girl pressed charges of child abuse against him. Their daughter had come home one day with a hickey on her neck, wrote the S?ddeutsche Zeitung on Friday.

After a police investigation, the case went to court. The defendant was accused of having kissed the girl on her neck in such a way so that a ?love bite of clearly visible dimensions? had appeared, and of ?repeatedly touching her clothed genitals.?

The boy, for his part, claimed it had been entirely consensual, which his lawyer said the girl had denied in court, wrote the paper.

The youth court issued the boy with a warning for ?sexual abuse of children? and sentenced him to 60 hours of community service.

Judges then told the teenager he would have to give a DNA sample so that he could be put on Germany's genetic database of sexual offenders as a likely re-offender.

But before he gave up the sample, judges from the Federal Constitutional Court intervened and said this would cause lasting damage to the boy's reputation.

Germany's highest court will now look into whether the boy's biometric data belongs on the register.

?There is no reason whatsoever for supposing the boy should commit serious crimes in the future,? his lawyer told the paper.

Snow Job: How Hollywood Fakes Winter on Film

Charlie Chaplin's groundbreaking silent film comedy found inspiration in the historical Klondike Gold Rush, and led the auteur to drag the production's cast and crew to snowy, rustic Trukee, Nevada to serve as the scenic Chilkoot Pass in Alaska. For the film's opening sequence, 600 extras from Sacramento were brought in by train to reenact the dangerous Yukon trek. The Trukee Ski Club helped clear a 2300-foot single file path near Donner Summit, and what is now the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort. The film was spectacular, but at a price. Many of the cast and crew became sick during shooting because of the harsh conditions.

Reprising his role as The Little Tramp, Chaplin found his comic pratfalls difficult to control in the frigid conditions, and after coming down with the flu, he finally agreed to return to Hollywood. Once back in the studio, work began on the creation of a miniature mountain range, constructed from timber (reportedly a quarter-of-a-million feet), chicken wire, and burlap. Salt and flour were used in lieu of snow, and the resulting snowscape was surprisingly convincing on film. To film the Miner's hut teetering on the edge of the cliff, studio technicians created a miniature model and filmed the scene so smoothly that the cut from the full-size set to the model is hard to detect.

Tunisian Islamists rally to show "power of street"

TUNIS (Reuters) - Thousands of Islamists marched in Tunis on Saturday in a show of strength, a day after the funeral of an assassinated secular politician drew the biggest crowds seen on the streets since Tunisia's uprising two years ago.

About 6,000 supporters of the ruling Ennahda movement rallied to back their leader Rachid al-Ghannouchi, who was the target of angry slogans raised by mourners at Friday's mass funeral of Chokri Belaid, a rights lawyer and opposition leader.

"The people want Ennahda again," the Islamists chanted, waving Tunisian and party flags as they marched towards the Interior Ministry on Habib Bourguiba Avenue in the city centre.

The demonstration was dwarfed by the tens of thousands who had turned out in Tunis and other cities to honor Belaid and to protest against the Islamist-led government the day before, shouting slogans that included "We want a new revolution".

Belaid's killing by an unidentified gunman on Wednesday, Tunisia's first such political assassination in decades, has shaken a nation still seeking stability after the overthrow of veteran strongman Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011.

The family of the slain politician has accused Ennahda of responsibility for his killing. The party denies any hand in it.

"We are here to support legitimacy, but if you prefer the power of the street, look at the streets today, we have this power," Lotfi Zitoun, an Ennahda leader, said in a speech to the Islamist demonstrators in Tunis.

Tunisia's political transition has been more peaceful than those in other Arab nations such as Egypt, Libya and Syria, but tensions are running high between Islamists elected to power and liberals who fear the loss of hard-won liberties.

FREEDOMS THREATENED

"We have gained things - the freedom of expression, the freedom to meet, to form organizations, parties, to work in the open," said Radhi Nasraoui, a veteran human rights campaigner.

"The problem is that these freedoms are still threatened, and there are attempts (by Islamists) to touch the gains of women," she told Reuters.

After Belaid's death, Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali promised to form a non-partisan, technocratic cabinet to run the country until an election could take place, despite complaints from within his own Ennahda party and its two junior non-Islamist coalition partners that he had failed to consult them.

Jebali told France 24 television on Saturday that he would resign if political parties refused to support his proposal, which he said was intended to "save the country from chaos".

The state news agency TAP said the prime minister would unveil his new government next week.

Secular groups have accused the Islamist-led government of a lax response to attacks by ultra-orthodox Salafi Islamists on cinemas, theatres, bars and individuals in recent months.

Prolonged political uncertainty and street unrest could damage an economy that relies on tourism. Unemployment and other economic grievances fuelled the revolt against Ben Ali in 2011.

Tunisia's stock exchange has fallen 3.32 percent since Belaid's assassination.

France, the former colonial power, ordered its schools in Tunis to stay closed on Friday and Saturday, warning its nationals to stay clear of potential flashpoints in the capital.

Some of the Islamist demonstrators shouted "France, out", in response to remarks by French Interior Minister Manuel Valls which were rejected by Jebali, the prime minister, on Friday.

"We must support all those who fight to maintain values and remain aware of the dangers of despotism, of Islamism that threatened those values today through obscurantism," Valls had said on Europe 1 radio on Thursday in comments on Tunisia.

"There is an Islamic fascism which is on the rise in many places."

Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem described Valls's remarks as "worrying and unfriendly".
