Global markets gain on hopes for Greek deal, China comments

TOKYO (Reuters) - Markets rose on Wednesday as investors hoped Greece would deliver on a commitment to enact harsh reforms, while comments from China's central bank governor saying Beijing would continue to invest in euro zone government debt aided sentiment.

European shares were expected to follow Asia higher, with financial spreadbetters expecting Britain's FTSE 100 .FTSE, Germany's DAX .GDAXI and France's CAC-40 .FCHI to open up around 0.2 to 0.9 percent.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS rose 1.4 percent while emerging Asian currencies also rose broadly.

A government source said on Tuesday that Greek conservative party leader Antonis Samaras was expected to deliver a letter of commitment to international lenders on Wednesday, meeting a key condition for a bailout agreement.

Asian shares, including Shanghai, Hong Kong and Japan, also broke through key technical resistances, after Zhou Xiaochuan said Beijing remains confident in the euro and in the ability of euro zone members to solve their debt problems.

The comment was in line with previous statements but suggested the European bailout fund could be leveraged by outside equity contributions, increasing its firepower, said Guy Stear, head of research with Societe Generale in Hong Kong.

"The reality is that people are looking for good news as confirmation of things, the better tone, since the beginning of the year," Stear said.

Japan's Nikkei .N225 rallied more than 2 percent to six-month highs, as Zhou's comments cemented risk positive sentiment stemming from the Bank of Japan's surprise easing action the day before.

The yen's drop to a 3-1/2-month low against the dollar of 78.67 bolstered exports, putting the Nikkei index ahead of its Asian peers. .T

The euro hit an intraday high of $1.3174, moving away from Tuesday's low around $1.3080.

The BOJ's aggressive quantitative easing had a rare global impact, mirroring markets' heavy reliance on central bank funding to ride out uncertainty while the euro zone debt crisis drags on.

"Excess liquidity in the global market is pushing investors back to equities, and the latest move by the central bank (BOJ) has tipped the dollar/yen rate to a favorable range so the market rally looks likely to continue for some time," said Hiroyuki Fukunaga, CEO of Investrust.

Other assets -- copper, oil and gold -- also rose along with the recovery in the euro and equities and a decline in the dollar.

U.S. crude edged up 0.9 percent to $101.66 a barrel and Brent crude added 0.7 percent to $118.14.

London copper gained 1 percent to $8,501 a tonne, with markets also seeking clues on Chinese demand. Spot gold added 0.4 percent to $1,727 an ounce.

GREECE FATE

The euro zone's flash gross domestic product for the fourth quarter will be released later in the session, with economists forecasting 0.7 percent growth from a year earlier, shrinking from a 1.4 percent year-on-year gain in the previous quarter.

A slowdown would make it even more difficult for highly-indebted euro zone countries to pay down their debt, even when the ECB's cheap loans have helped ease their refinancing efforts by driving down their yields.

France's biggest listed bank, BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA), ended 2011 with a 50.6 percent drop in quarterly net profit, hit by losses on Greek debt and asset sales that nonetheless helped it meet tougher capital targets six months early.

Euro zone finance ministers dropped plans on Tuesday for a special face-to-face meeting on Greece's new 130 billion euro international bailout because Greece has shown little sign of meeting the deadline to provide a firm commitment to reforms. Getting a bailout is crucial for Athens, with 14.5 billion euros in debt repayments falling due on March 20.

Euro ministers will hold a telephone conference call before a regular meeting already scheduled for February 20.

Europe gave Greece until Wednesday to specify how 325 million euros of the 3.3 billion euros demanded in budget savings will be achieved and to give a written commitment to implement the terms of the deal.

EASING IMPACT

Asian credit markets firmed slightly, with the spreads on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment grade index tightening by a couple of basis points from Tuesday.

Sterling recovered from a two-week low against the dollar hit on Tuesday after Moody's warning, but remained vulnerable before the Bank of England's latest growth and price forecasts due later in the session. The forecasts could offer clues on whether more monetary easing is likely after the BoE increased quantitative easing last week.

"Risk sentiment is trading sideways, trapped between ECB support and solvency concerns," Barclays Capital said in a note.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Playing Alabama without its two biggest stars, No. 14 Florida had no problem making up for its own missing players.

Patric Young took advantage of the Crimson Tide's suspension-depleted frontcourt with 19 points and the Gators won 61-52 Tuesday night.

Florida coach Billy Donovan could only give his team so much credit for surviving without the injured Will Yeguete (concussion) and Mike Rosario (bruised hip) when the Tide didn't have JaMychal Green and Tony Mitchell.

"It was an ugly game in a lot of respects, but let's also realize, too, that Alabama was playing without their two leading scorers," Donovan said. "We had two guys out, they had two guys out."

The impacts clearly weren't equal.

The Gators (20-6, 8-3 Southeastern Conference) scored the first 16 points of the second half to turn a tie score into a comfortable win after losing two straight games.

The Tide (16-9, 5-6) has lost two in a row without its top two scorers and rebounders, who are on indefinite suspension. Guards Trevor Releford and Andrew Steele did rejoin the team and the starting lineup after being held out for the LSU game.

"We were prepared for Florida," Steele said. "Everything that happened this past weekend, we put it behind us and we moved on."

Tide coach Anthony Grant said he hasn't made a decision on the status of Green and Mitchell for Saturday's game with Tennessee.

"In practice, we've got to go to work," Grant said. "We've got to get better as a team. We've got to make sure that our guys understand that. They can face reality. We're getting hit in the face with reality right now. How do we respond to that?

"I expect that we have guys that are fighters."

Young was hard to stop inside for the Tide in the 22 minutes he was on the court. He scored 12 in the second half despite heading to the bench with four fouls halfway through and fouling out late. He finished 9 for 12 from the field. Erik Murphy and Bradley Beal scored 14 points apiece. Murphy made 4 of 7 3-pointers while Beal had eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.

Erving Walker had seven assists to break Ronnie Montgomery's Florida career record of 503 set from 1985-88.

Steele led Alabama with 11 points. Charles Hankerson added nine points while Releford scored eight, all in the first half, and had three steals.

The Tide had to turn to little-used big men Carl Engstrom and Moussa Gueye after freshman starter Nick Jacobs drew two quick fouls. Jacobs only played seven minutes, and Grant made another statement.

"In the second half, I didn't think that he came out with the energy that he needs to, so some other guys got some opportunities," the coach said. He said Jacobs took a shot to the mouth in practice this week and visited the dentist Tuesday morning.

It proved a post mismatch without him, but the Gators also forced 18 turnovers, including some on errant passes and miscommunications. The 6-foot-5 Levi Randolph helped Alabama to a 34-32 rebounding edge with nine boards.

The Gators came out firing in the second half.

Murphy opened with a 3-pointer and Young hit four baskets inside, including a pair of dunks during the Gators' 5-minute surge that put them up 42-26 and forced Grant to burn a pair of timeouts against his mentor and former boss at Florida, Donovan.

Florida started the half 7-of-8 shooting while Alabama missed its first 10 shots after the Gators switched to a zone defense. The Tide couldn't climb back to within single digits until the game's final basket.

"At halftime we talked about coming out with great energy," Young said. "I thought I had an opportunity to give our team some juice. I was able to sprint out and teammates were able to find me and I was able to finish the plays."

Steele hit Alabama's first basket of the half with 11 minutes left.

The Gators didn't need a big game from leading scorer Kenny Boynton, who finished with nine points, but didn't have a field goal in the first 25 minutes.

"I felt fairly decent going into the half because Walker and Boynton were 0 for 8 from the field," Donovan said. "I thought Alabama struggling from the field to start the second half enabled us to kind of get on a big run."

The SEC's top scoring team also didn't need to approach its 78.8-point average either against a Tide team that is second in the league in scoring defense, but had few consistent scoring threats left.

Releford and Murphy traded 3-pointers late in the first half and the teams went into the locker room tied at 26-26, the lowest scoring first half of the season for the Gators.

Florida, coming off losses to Kentucky and Tennessee, heated up for the final 20 minutes by making half its shots.

Alabama finished just 4 of 16 from 3-point range and 12 of 24 from the free throw line. Yet another teaching point for Grant.

"That's just a lesson that you get in the SEC, that you cannot rely on how your offense is going to provide your energy," he said.

DNA sequencing helps immune system attack tumors

ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2012) ? DNA sequences from tumor cells can be used to direct the immune system to attack cancer, according to scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The research, in mice, appears online Feb. 8 in Nature.

The immune system relies on an intricate network of alarm bells, targets and safety brakes to determine when and what to attack. The new results suggest that scientists may now be able to combine DNA sequencing data with their knowledge of the triggers and targets that set off immune alarms to more precisely develop vaccines and other immunotherapies for cancer.

"We already have ways to identify specific targets for immunotherapy, but they are technically challenging, extremely labor-intensive and often take more than a year to complete," says senior author Robert Schreiber, PhD, the Alumni Professor of Pathology and Immunology at the School of Medicine and co-leader of the tumor immunology program at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. "These difficulties have stood in the way of developing personalized immunotherapies for cancer patients, who often require immediate care for their disease. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies to show that the faster methods provided by DNA sequencing can help. That opens up all kinds of exciting possibilities."

Scientists have long maintained that the immune system can recognize cancer as a threat either on its own or with the help of vaccines or other immunotherapeutic treatments, which help alert the immune system to the danger posed by cancers. Once the cancer is recognized, the immune system should develop the capacity to attack growing cancer cells until either the tumor is eradicated or the immune system's resources are exhausted.

Schreiber and his colleagues have shown that interactions between the immune system and cancer are more complex. Their theory, called cancer immunoediting, suggests that some of the mutations in tumor cells are very easy for the immune system to recognize as a threat. If the immune system detects these mutations in cancer cells, it attacks until they are destroyed.

At that point, the cancer may be eliminated. But it's also possible that the cancer can be "edited" by the immune system, resulting in the removal of all the cells containing the critical easily recognized mutations. The remaining tumor cells can continue to grow or enter into a period of dormancy where they are not destroyed but are held in check by the immune system.

For the new study, Schreiber and his colleagues wanted to define the genetics of tumors that had yet to interact with the immune system. To do so, they induced tumors in mice with disabled immune systems. They collaborated with Washington University's Genome Institute scientists, who sequenced the cancer cells' genes.

"Until very recently, this work would have been impractical because of the costs involved," Schreiber says. "But the technology has improved and prices have come down, and now it's possible to obtain this genetic information for a few thousand dollars instead of a million."

By comparing genetic data from cancer cells and normal cells, scientists identified 3,743 mutations in the genes of the tumor cells. Next, they turned to an online database of protein sequences likely to be recognized by a key immune system sensor. This helped them narrow their focus to a few mutated genes whose altered proteins seemed most likely to trigger immune system attacks. One of these mutated proteins, an altered form of spectrin-beta2, was present in all tumor cells that were attacked by the immune system and in none of the cells that were ignored.

Researchers cloned this mutant gene and put it into other mouse tumor cells that lacked the mutation. When transplanted into mice with normal immunity, the tumor cells that made the mutant spectrin-beta 2 protein were attacked and eliminated by immune cells.

"Many of the cancer genome projects now under way are looking for the 'driver' mutations, or the mutations that cause the cancers," Schreiber says. "Our results suggest there may be additional information in the sequencing data that can help us make the immune system attack cancers."

Schreiber calls the spectrin-beta2 mutation identified in the study "low-hanging fruit," noting that it's such a red flag to the immune system that its presence normally leads the immune system to assault cancer cells without any prompting from immunotherapy.

He and his colleagues are currently sequencing DNA in tumors grown from mice with normal immune systems to see if they can identify mutations that are not as readily discernible to the immune system.

"The idea would be to make a vaccine that helps the immune system recognize and attack six or seven of these mutated proteins in a cancer," he says. "Therapeutically, that could be very helpful."

North Korea challenges Seoul to Q+A over dialogue (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? North Korea's new leadership, highly critical of South Korea since taking power, published an unusual "open questionnaire" to its rival on Thursday, demanding answers to show that Seoul was sincere about resuming inter-Korean dialogue.

South Korea has reached out to its reclusive neighbor since the death of the state's leader Kim Jong-il last December in the hope of persuading Pyongyang to suspend its nuclear program and return to regional aid-for-disarmament talks.

John Delury of Yonsei University said the North was trying to call South Korea's bluff on its willingness to engage, saying some of the demands would be dismissed as ludicrous in Seoul.

Analysts also said the North was also trying to influence voters in presidential and parliamentary elections in the South this year, by portraying the ruling conservatives as impeding improved relations on the divided peninsula.

The policy department of the North's National Defence Commission ran the questions on the state KCNA news agency, saying the South should make clear its aims on resuming dialogue.

"The Policy Department of the DPRK (North Korea's) NDC solemnly urges them to answer the following open questions as they loudly trumpet about a resumption of North-South dialogue and improvement of relations," the Council said in the dispatch.

The questions related to denuclearization, joint U.S.-South Korea military drills, two deadly attacks on the South in 2010, psychological warfare and the need to conclude a peace treaty to replace an armistice which ended the 1950-53 Korean war.

Under its new "supreme commander" Kim Jong-un, the North has denounced President Lee Myung-bak's administration as a group of "confrontational maniacs" and "moral imbeciles."

South Korea has dismissed the remarks as vitriol, and insists it is ready to talk, even stating it will consider a resumption of food aid if its impoverished rival returns to the negotiating table.

In a separate and more extended KCNA item, the commission laid out the course of action for Seoul to take.

It urged the Lee administration to "stop talking about North-South dialogue and improved relations and think again whether it has qualifications to be a dialogue partner of the DPRK," referring to the North by the initials of its official name.

SOUTH SAYS WILL NOT RESPOND TO QUESTIONS

South Korea's Unification Ministry, which handles relations with the North, said in a statement that it would not respond to the questions. It urged the North to take dialogue seriously.

Last month, the North slammed the door shut on talks with the conservative government in Seoul, but analysts said the questions from the National Defence Commission, which controls the powerful military, showed there was still hope for engagement.

"If the South Koreans can say 'yes' to five of these nine questions, which they actually probably could, then you could see this as a kind of olive branch toward resuming some sort of indirect dialogue," said Delury of Yonsei University.

Relations between the two Koreas soured when Lee won office in 2008. He cut off all economic aid to the North, demanding Pyongyang's complete denuclearization for the resumption of aid, which amounted to around $4.5 billion the preceding decade.

The questionnaire appeared a day after Washington's top diplomat for East Asian affairs, Kurt Campbell, said there was still hope for diplomacy on the peninsula, but insisted the path to broader regional talks must start with improved inter-Korean relations.

North Korea, which has twice tested an atomic device, walked out of international nuclear disarmament talks in 2009.
